“Of course, we wouldn’t be holding the film festival in the winter.”

Coleman stood in front of his captive audience and puffed his chest out. The pride in his achievements was obvious, despite the fact he hadn’t achieved anything yet. Grant crossed one leg across his knee and leaned back in his chair.

“It isn’t winter now.”

Coleman looked down at Grant. He liked looking down at people.

“This high up, anything after September can be winter.” He waved toward the front doors. “Case in point.”

Then he made an expansive gesture toward the top of the stairs and beyond.

“By the time all the permits are approved the mountain retreat will boast two screening rooms, a restaurant and a presentation area, all surrounded by the most spectacular views on the festival circuit. And completely isolated. They’ll have no option but to watch all the movies in competition.”

Coleman laughed.

“They’ll have to vote or I won’t let them out.”

McNulty took a sip of his milky coffee with lots of sugar.

“Is that how Redford does it?”

Coleman turned to look at McNulty.

“There’s a reason his festival is called Sundance. Because he starred with Paul Newman in one of the most iconic westerns ever. If you’ve got Paul Newman on speed dial, people don’t want to leave before their time.”

Grant ran with that train of thought to get back on track.

“Maybe your screen test will find the new Paul Newman.”

He indicated the Arriflex next to F.K.s chair.

“The screen test being why we’re here—not the Sundance Festival.”

Coleman gave the room a condescending smile but spoke to Grant.

“Yes, of course. My apologies. Sometimes my ambitions get the better of me. And thank you all again for coming to see me. I know you were set up down there in Loveland, so I appreciate your taking the time.”

Grant uncrossed his leg and stood up.

“Speaking of coming up here.” He nodded toward the front doors. “And since the scenery is so spectacular.”

He smiled at Coleman. “Why don’t we shoot you outside?”

“In the snow?”

“On the porch.”

“Instead of in the glow of a roaring fire?”

Grant shrugged but kept smiling.

“It would give you an edge in the audition stakes. You know, rugged mountain-man type. You got a fur coat and a hat?”

Coleman let out a sigh while he considered the proposal, then nodded.

“You may have a point. Yes. Let’s do that.”

Grant waved for the others to get up. F.K. unzipped the Arriflex from its cover and McNulty picked up the portable lights. Larry looked like he didn’t want to leave the fire. Grant took two steps toward the door, hoping the Longfellow boys were ready for their closeup. Coleman didn’t move.

“But let me show you something first.”
