Chapter 17
An involuntary laugh escapes my lips as I watch Christine demonstrate proper table manners to her brother.
âNow, James. You must keep your elbows off the table and donât eat your food with your fingers,â Christine says with authority. âMommy and Daddy said itâsâ¦â Christine looks over at Michelle and I, âWhatcha say, Mommy, bar-bari-un if we do it?â
Michelle lets out a giggle as well. âThatâs right, honey. And barbarians are people with very poor table mannersââ
âWho also smell really bad because they donât take baths regularly,â I interject with a bright smile. âAnd we donât want to smell bad, right, kiddo?â
James looks on, bewildered, as his sister replies with her best stab at indignation. âOh no, Daddy. Nobody wants to smell bad.â
I look over lovingly at the mother of my children. Moments like these have been hard to come by since Ma was attacked. But, with everything we have been through and will be going through, we need these moments to keep us sane and anchored to what is important in life â love and family.
The doorbell rings. âIâll get it, honey,â I say to Michelle as I rise and make my way to the front door. âMay be Kennedy.â
Sure enough, it is. âHow we doing, buddy? Come on in.â
Michelle wanders in from the kitchen, James at her hip, Christine holding her hand next to her. âGood to see you, Kevin. Howâs your day going?â
âGreat, Michelle.â Kennedy leans in and kisses her, then pulls out a few Hersheyâs kisses for the kids that have melted on the ride over. âHow about some treats for Uncle Kevinâs favorite niece and nephew?â
âThank you,â they sing in unison.
âWe were just finishing up dinner. Can I get you something, Kev?â Michelle inquires.
âSure, thatâd be great. Iâll meet you in the kitchen.â With a nod to the right, towards my study, Kevin says, âCan I speak to you a second, Chris?â
A few moments later Kennedy and I settle into leather seats across from each other.
âIs this about the meeting with Spatick, Kev?â
Yeah. But first, howâs your mom doing?â
I fill him in on yesterdayâs events, about how we almost lost her and the phone call from Hsu two hours earlier. âFor now they have her stabilized.â I bite my lower lip. âTheyâll give her the treatment in the morning.â
âThank God. Sheâs strong, Chris. Sheâs gonna pull through.â
I wish for the same optimism. âI hope so, Kev.â Images of Mom laying in that hospital bed, time running out, race through my mind. I shake my head, trying to clear it, as I struggle to focus on the here and now. âSo, what happened with the meeting?â I say with little enthusiasm.
âOh yeah. Well, Kelly and Blumenthal were there too, though youâd hardly know it. Spatick pretty much ignored them while he kept me on the hot seat.â
I wait a few beats for my friend to continue while I ponder the situation. A couple of days ago, after my carelessness cost a patient his life, Kennedy and
