Cautions

Older leaves may cause slight irritation to the throat when eaten raw, without dressing.

FORAGER NOTE: Everyone should get to know lamb’s quarter. Not only is it widespread throughout the DC and surrounding area, but it can also be found throughout the world. I once spent a week in the mountains eating only lamb’s quarter (salad, soup, fried, boiled). It is a plant that I can depend on finding even during a drought when nothing else is available.

Urban farmer Julie Balaa inspects two plants that can be easily confused: black nightshade, on the left, and green lamb’s quarter (C. murale), on the right.
