A gasp came from somewhere behind her and she swivelled around, wiping tears from her eyes with her wrist. Whatever was going on was a well-timed, welcome distraction. Someone was sprawled out on the ground. She heard mutters that somebody had collapsed. It was probably inevitable with this many people being pushed so hard. There were people a lot less fit than her, which she found oddly comforting. One of the medical staff ran across the grass with a box of supplies.

Layla looked around for Beth but couldn't see her. One of the guards yelled for everyone to go back inside and to give them some space. All at once, everyone made their way towards the set of double doors that led to the dining hall. It was probably breakfast time anyway. Exercise before breakfast was inhumane, Layla decided, her stomach growling like Chewbacca. There weren't many guards around. No one to keep everything in check. No one was giving them instructions. Will and Layla tacked on to the back of the crowd that congregated around the doors like a shoal of sardines—too many people to fit through the doors. It reminded her of getting on and off a plane, back when travelling abroad was still allowed. All those people standing up and jostling to be the first in or out. Layla would sit comfortably and wait, and then, once everyone had gone ahead, she would breeze through. Everyone was always so impatient, always in a rush. Here, there was nothing to rush for.
