Chapter 4

Bria was working on the lock of her cage with a small piece of metal she found on her jeans. It had been attached to the waist with the designer’s name on it. Her stomach rumbled. She hadn’t had anything to eat in two days. Jiggling the piece of metal in the keyhole, she heard the creak of the door, startled, she dropped it and it landed just outside of her cage.

Her captor stormed in visibly irritated, pacing back and forth at the front of the room. She heard the crinkle of a bag as the footsteps came closer.

The door swung open and something was shoved inside. “Here. Eat. I can’t starve you to death. Not yet anyway.” She noted that even though the voice was mechanical, it sounded angrier than it ever had.

Bria crawled up to the items, snatched them up and scooted back again. Opening the small bag, it held one plain bagel. She’d recognize the bag anywhere. The familiar heart logo with a flame on it. Hot Hearts. A damn of tears welled behind her eyes. She wondered if Jason or Allayna had been there too. Her stomach rumbled again, and she nibbled the edge of the bagel. Plain was better than nothing. Plain was better than dead. She grabbed the cup that was next to the bag and brought it to her lips. Warm bitter liquid washed over her tongue. Black coffee. Blech. She always drank it with lots of cream and sugar, but she was glad for the warmth of it as it slid down her throat.

Her jailer stormed up to her cage and hovered over it, ripping a piece of bagel off and chewing forcefully. “People disgust me. Creatures…disgust me.” So forcefully in fact, Bria was able to catch a glimpse of lipstick laden lips and female facial features as the mask she hid behind became misaligned. “Do you know why?”

Bria shook her head no.

“I see them everywhere. Werewolves with Vampires. Vampires with Fey. Werewolves with Fey. It’s disgusting! You know, it’s only going to end in disaster and heartbreak.” The furious woman paced in front of her cage. “They think they’re in love. They think they’re so happy. Just wait! Wait until one of them finds someone new. Someone better…and leaves them sitting at a table in Chez Magnifique all alone.” She slammed her fist on the cage. “Foolish. Foolish creatures. Foolish hearts!”

“Did you see someone you knew at the café?” asked Bria, thinking that if she got to know her, woman to woman, it might be beneficial.

“No, no,” she spat with irritation as she glared through the bars. “They’re everywhere. Hugging and kissing,” she said, her speech pressured and spitting with each word. “No Fey in their right mind should be kissing a Werewolf. Creatures weren’t meant to mix.” Spit and bits of bagel collected on the outside of her mask “We all have our own special powers. Our own special DNA. It turns my stomach to see such things. None of them will ever be happy.
