Chapter 34
Jenna flushed scarlet as Brad stepped onto the deck with Zackâs iPhone in his hand.
âI think itâs okay,â he said, staring down at the screen and then pointedly across the deck at Jenna. âIt landed on one of the chaises. Picture seems to be perfect.â
His eyes stayed on her as Zack strode to his side. âIâll take that.â He snatched the phone from Bradâs fingers, and his voice was quivering with anger when he spoke. âWhat do you want, Brad?â
Brad hesitated, turning his gaze to the chaise across from Jenna, but neither Jenna nor Zack asked him to sit.
âSo, hereâs the thing: I drove to Riverhead to speak to Bethanyâs roommate. As yâall know by now, she didnât hear from Bethany on that Sunday at all. The jitney didnât hear from her. There was no reservation made in Bethanyâs name, and no one in the pharmacy at the bus stop remembers her coming in that Sunday afternoon or being dropped off at the bus stop.â
Jenna was aware of Zack staring at her, raising an eyebrow. Then he turned to Brad.
âIâm sorry Brad, I should have told you before, I didnât drop Bethany off at the bus stop, I didnât give her a ride to the jitney that Sunday. I told Jenna that after she found Bethanyâs cell phone in her room. I wasnât exactly truthful about it first time around because I was kinda embarrassed I didnât go after her, but Bethany was gone by the time I got back to the house from the boat. I figured Jenna would have told you that when you came for the cell phone.â
Jenna gulped her coffee and narrowly avoided sputtering it all over herself. Why was Zack making it sound as if she was the dishonest one? As if she was the one hiding something?
Sure enough, Brad was staring right at her when he said: âSo, okay, which one of you erased Bethanyâs texts?â
Jenna put down her coffee mug before it slipped out of her fingers. She was aware that her hand was trembling. Sheâd been afraid it might come to this, since Bethanyâs roommate still had those texts on her phone.
Her face was aflame. âI checked the phone. I was curious to see if there was anything on it, some clue. If I erased the texts, it was by mistake.â
Jenna glanced at Zack. He looked as if he didnât believe her. Brad wasnât buying it either. He paced across the deck between them. âLook, you two, the roommate kept all the texts and they were kinda revealing about what was going on here.â
Jenna was aware that Brad hadnât taken his eyes off her. âShe told her roommate you walked out on Zack because you found out that she and he were having an affair.â
Zack was shaking his head before Brad finished speaking. âSwear to God, Chief.â He held up his hands as if in mock surrender. âNot an ounce of truth to that. An affair? Are you kidding me? She may have wanted it, but I didnât do anything to encourage her.
