Chapter 34

Jenna flushed scarlet as Brad stepped onto the deck with Zack’s iPhone in his hand.

“I think it’s okay,” he said, staring down at the screen and then pointedly across the deck at Jenna. “It landed on one of the chaises. Picture seems to be perfect.”

His eyes stayed on her as Zack strode to his side. “I’ll take that.” He snatched the phone from Brad’s fingers, and his voice was quivering with anger when he spoke. “What do you want, Brad?”

Brad hesitated, turning his gaze to the chaise across from Jenna, but neither Jenna nor Zack asked him to sit.

“So, here’s the thing: I drove to Riverhead to speak to Bethany’s roommate. As y’all know by now, she didn’t hear from Bethany on that Sunday at all. The jitney didn’t hear from her. There was no reservation made in Bethany’s name, and no one in the pharmacy at the bus stop remembers her coming in that Sunday afternoon or being dropped off at the bus stop.”

Jenna was aware of Zack staring at her, raising an eyebrow. Then he turned to Brad.

“I’m sorry Brad, I should have told you before, I didn’t drop Bethany off at the bus stop, I didn’t give her a ride to the jitney that Sunday. I told Jenna that after she found Bethany’s cell phone in her room. I wasn’t exactly truthful about it first time around because I was kinda embarrassed I didn’t go after her, but Bethany was gone by the time I got back to the house from the boat. I figured Jenna would have told you that when you came for the cell phone.”

Jenna gulped her coffee and narrowly avoided sputtering it all over herself. Why was Zack making it sound as if she was the dishonest one? As if she was the one hiding something?

Sure enough, Brad was staring right at her when he said: “So, okay, which one of you erased Bethany’s texts?”

Jenna put down her coffee mug before it slipped out of her fingers. She was aware that her hand was trembling. She’d been afraid it might come to this, since Bethany’s roommate still had those texts on her phone.

Her face was aflame. “I checked the phone. I was curious to see if there was anything on it, some clue. If I erased the texts, it was by mistake.”

Jenna glanced at Zack. He looked as if he didn’t believe her. Brad wasn’t buying it either. He paced across the deck between them. “Look, you two, the roommate kept all the texts and they were kinda revealing about what was going on here.”

Jenna was aware that Brad hadn’t taken his eyes off her. “She told her roommate you walked out on Zack because you found out that she and he were having an affair.”

Zack was shaking his head before Brad finished speaking. “Swear to God, Chief.” He held up his hands as if in mock surrender. “Not an ounce of truth to that. An affair? Are you kidding me? She may have wanted it, but I didn’t do anything to encourage her.
