The Succulent Pomegranate

The pomegranate is a unique fruit that originated in Iran and the Himalaya region of northern India. The fruit is widely grown throughout South Asia and western states in the United States. Pomegranates were introduced to California by Spanish settlers in the mid-1700s.

Many pomegranates that are sold in grocery stores have a round red outer layer and are often found in the tropical fruit section. The fruit also comes in green, yellow, orange, purple, or pink varieties.

Pomegranates grow on bushy shrublike trees that have many trunks and red-orange flowers. The outer layer of the fruit is leathery and somewhat hard to cut into. But once inside the pomegranate there are hundreds of shiny fluid-filled edible seeds called arils. The arils are known to have antioxidants such as vitamins C and K. They are also high in fiber and have a sweet yet tart flavor. Pomegranates can be eaten directly, used as a garnish, or mashed to create products such as juice drinks, smoothies, syrup, and wine.
