CHAPTER 30

The New Al Capone

“Charlie,” said Tran, putting down his coffee cup, “you have done an excellent job for me. Thanks to you, I now know for the first time where all of my money is. Play ball with me, Charlie, and you’ll go a long way in my organization.”

One of Tran’s men walked up and whispered something in Tran’s ear. Tran’s expression never changed.

Tran picked up his napkin and patted his lips. He smiled at Charlie. “Come on, Charlie, I have a special meeting to go to, and I would like you there with me.”

They left the Bay 101 Club and walked out to Tran’s car. As they left the parking lot, Tran got onto Highway 101, heading south. It was early evening and just getting dark. Tran turned off on Tully Road and headed east. This was the area known as the Eastside of San Jose. It was an area of the city that had once been almost exclusively Hispanic. Now, it was primarily Asian. Charlie relaxed in the passenger seat and listened to the car stereo. Driving to the Eastside was normal since all of Tran’s dealings were with the Asian community in San Jose. This stretch of Tully Road was where many Asian businesses were located.

When they got to Quimby Road, Tran turned right. They skirted the Eastridge Shopping Mall and continued across Capitol Expressway. This took them into the upscale residential area of the east foothills. Charlie thought that maybe they were going to someone’s house. A lot of Asians lived in this neighborhood.

However, to Charlie’s surprise, Tran kept driving into the east foothills. They had left all of the houses behind. They were the only car on a winding backcountry road at night. Charlie started to get nervous.

“Where are we going?” asked Charlie.

Tran looked over and smiled at him. “Relax, we are almost there.”

They rounded another bend in the road, and Charlie saw two cars parked on the shoulder of the road. Tran slowed down and pulled in behind one of the cars. Tran got out of the car and motioned Charlie to follow him. As they walked towards the front of the car they had parked behind, Charlie could see three men kneeling in front of the car in the glare of the headlights.

Tran put his arm around Charlie’s shoulder and pointed towards the three men. “You see these three men here, Charlie? I used to call them my friends. I used to trust them. That is until you showed me how they had been stealing from me. I thank you for that, Charlie. You showed me that I should trust no one. You also showed me that I needed to be more firm in my discipline.

“Charlie, do you remember the movie we watched last night? The one about Al Capone and Elliot Ness? The Untouchables? That is one of my favorite movies, Charlie. Did you know that? Not because of Elliot Ness, no, because of Al Capone. Al Capone built an empire and ruled it with an iron fist.
