Chapter 32

Josh cast his eyes around, but there was no sign of Marvin, and he couldn't see Reggie or Callum either.

There were a few people who were the worse for wear, hardly surprising since the drink was free and it was past midnight. But so far he hadn’t seen anything to confirm Victor’s suspicions. There had been flirting, which aside from Owen with Blossom seemed to be restricted to men flirting with other men, but that was also to be expected.

However, if it was a party for gay men then why were Blossom and the other girls there? And why was someone like Owen, who was as heterosexual as they come, invited?

It certainly warranted further investigation.

He felt a tap on his back and turned to see Callum and another boy of about the same age, if not younger. He was about Josh’s height and had wavy brown hair and baby skin. There was no muscle to him and he looked like he’d done most of his growing in the last year or so.

“Oh hi, Callum,” Josh said.

“George, this is Dylan,” Callum said.

“Hi, George,” Dylan said. He looked around nervously after he said it, then added, “Here they come.”

Josh looked behind him to see the imposing figure of Reggie approaching accompanied by a tall man with huge glasses who he immediately recognised as Marvin.

“Is anything wrong?” Josh asked quickly while they were still making their way over.

“I don’t want to go with them,” Callum said.

“Go where?”

Reggie and Marvin arrived before Callum could answer and it was immediately apparent that Marvin was almost paralytically drunk. He was struggling to stand straight and kept falling against Reggie. Josh recalled that Maj had said he was in much the same way at the awards ceremony.

“Come on, Dyl-boy,” Marvin slurred.

“I don’t want to,” Dylan said.

Marvin reached out and grabbed Dylan by the arm. “Won’ harm you,” he said.

“He doesn't want to go,” Josh said and pulled Marvin’s hand away.

“What the fuck’s it got to do with you?” Reggie asked, pushing his imposing frame between Josh and Dylan.

“If Dylan doesn't want to go he doesn't have to.”

Reggie shoved his over-sized belly against Josh making him stagger back a pace. “It’s none of your fucking business!” he shouted, his eyes wide.

Josh returned the glare. “Leave him alone,” he said.

At that moment someone pulled Reggie back and Josh saw it was Kieran, the man in the dinner jacket who had taken his phone at the beginning of the evening.

“Can we keep it down, guys?” Kieran said, his voice steady. “What’s the matter?”

“I don't want to go with him,” Dylan whimpered, gesturing to Marvin.

“Why?”

“He’s old and I don't fancy him.”

“I just wanna talk,” Marvin said.

Kieran gave a little laugh. “No, Marvin. I don't think that’s true, is it?” He raised his voice slightly. “I think you need to back away and leave these guys alone.”

“Callum’s with me,” Reggie said.

“No, I’m not,” Callum said.

“Right,” Kieran said, looking at Reggie. “I think both you and Marvin need to leave these lads alone.
