Chapter Twenty-Two

Emma

“Rise and shine, sleepyhead!”

An annoying female voice squeaked in my ear.

I grunted and tried to hit anyone who was bothering me right now.

“Come on, honey, coffee cools.”

Not the same person. A man had talked. No, not a man, but a guy.

“Rory,” I muttered, “you’re the best, you know?”

I sat up and grabbed the cup of coffee from Rory’s hands. I sipped it with my eyes still closed.

“And me?” Leslie pouted, pretending to have gotten her feelings hurt.

“Nope.” I smiled at her. “My best friend would have woken me up with a cup of coffee and not by shouting in my ears.”

“You are mean.”

“Yeah, I know.”

She made a face before throwing her hands around my neck and hugging me tightly. The coffee spilled out of the cup, staining the white dress she had lent me, but it didn’t seem to bother her.

“I’ll miss you so much,” she whispered in my ear.

“Oh, come on! Enough with this fuss or you’ll make me cry, too!” Rory shouted, throwing himself on the sofa and crushing me under his weight, while trying to hug both of us.

We spent a little time like this, close to each other with tears streaming down our faces.

I didn’t realize how much time had passed until my cell phone buzzed madly.

Several missed calls and one message.

I start believing you want punishment. You’re really a naughty girl, my love.

I sighed, but ignored it. My attention instead went to the phone number that had called me throughout the morning, trying to reach out for me so hard.

I redialed and called it back.

“Good morning, Emma.”

Mayor Erickson’s voice was low and cold.

“You’re late and this makes me think you don’t care so much about helping your father.”

I needed a few seconds to reconnect and understand his words.

Damn, I had completely forgotten the date with him!

“No, sir. Please give me half an hour. I’ll be with you as soon as possible.”

There was a moment of silence.

“All right, my dear. But not another minute of delay. If you’re not here at ten-thirty, I’ll hold our agreement null.”

“Yes, sir. I won’t let you down, I swear.” And in so saying, I hung up the phone and ran upstairs to get my clothes back.

I entered the bathroom in Rory’s room and locked the door behind me.

I felt dizzy, and a little confused. There were marks on my wrists that had not been there the day before, and I’d had this strange dream where I was making out with both Drakon brothers, or at least I thought it was a dream.

I looked at the two dark stripes on the skin of each of my wrists. Two twin marks a few inches high that looked like burns. They might have looked like the sign left by bracelets that were too tight, or by handcuffs.

A shiver ran through my back. Why did I feel connected to something, or someone? Imprisoned forever and yet strangely free for the first time.

I shook my head, trying to clear my mind. I was freaking out.
