Evan

Evan had zoned in and out of the conversation that night at dinner with Toby and Milo. He felt edgy and restless and wasn’t sure why.

“Figured we’d better check out that bridge because everyone says it’s haunted,” Toby said. “Turns out, not so much.” He paused to take another mouthful of stuffed cabbage and washed it down with a swig of beer. “More like the local make-out spot, from the look of it.”

“But on the plus side, down the road a piece we ran into our very own phantom hitchhiker,” Milo added.

“Those are real?” Evan couldn’t contain his surprise.

“This one was.” Milo helped himself to another serving. “White dress, long dark hair, all bedraggled-looking and helpless by the side of the road.”

“And after you threw salt at her, it was a good thing she vanished, because if she’d been real, she probably would have reported you for harassment,” Toby replied, chuckling.

“Can you banish something like that?” Evan’s curiosity got the best of him.

“Probably, if we found out who she was, where she’s buried, how she died,” Toby said. “It’s just a type of repeater ghost. Thing is, she’s not really dangerous. And that’s not why we’re here.”

“Yeah, getting caught burning her bones would blow the surprise for Sturdevant,” Milo agreed. “Priorities.”

“Anyhow, we ruled out the bridge,” Toby said.

“Tomorrow, I want to go to Elk Mountain Manor,” Evan said. “The mansion that Sturdevant built back in the day. It’s a museum, and it’s supposed to contain original furnishings. We might pick up on something.”

“Fine by me,” Seth replied. “And then I vote for going to see Kyle and Scott. Get Kyle to safety. I can’t shake the feeling we’re on borrowed time.”

“You think he’ll listen?” Toby asked.

“Scott knows what we do,” Milo answered. “And I told him Kyle was in danger. His boy is in love with Kyle. He asked me to keep them both safe. So yeah, I think he’ll listen, but before we go WITSEC on him, we need to have a plan.”

Seth looked up. “Taking Kyle is the plan, isn’t it? Once he goes missing, Sturdevant has to come looking for him, or his schemes go up in smoke. We have his anchor, and we’ll go after the amulet when we corner him. We just need a secure place to stash Kyle—and Steve—until it’s over.”

“It makes sense,” Toby said, “but I doubt it’ll be that easy.”

“It never is,” Milo muttered.

“Sturdevant isn’t expecting us,” Seth said, eyes shining with excitement. “We’re early for his cycle by more than a year. He’s got his eye on Kyle, just waiting for the right time. Then Kyle vanishes, and Sturdevant is going to have to make a move or lose his chance to level-up.”

“Kinda hard on Kyle’s family for him to just vanish.” Toby leveled a look at Seth.

“Better than claiming his body at the morgue.” The light dimmed in Seth’s eyes, and Evan knew his partner was thinking about having to do just that, for Jesse. He reached over and took Seth’s hand, gave his fingers a squeeze.
