IF: I had never accepted the grant to come to Brookfield in the first place, THEN:
Charlie would never have come here and would still be alive today,
AND therefore Hazelâs dreams for happiness would not have been shattered,
AND Frank and even little Lucy would still have the friend they loved.
IF: Charlie had not died, THEN:
Lucy would never have been taken to the Animal Shelter,
AND Robert would never have gone there to check on her for me,
AND therefore Robert would never have been murdered there.
SO, THEREFORE, IF: I had never come to Brookfield, THEN:
Robert would not have had the need to come to the theater to plead for Belinda,
AND therefore would not have eaten the Danish,
Which led to his hospitalization,
Which led two days later to his murder,
AND Belindaâs state of shock,
AND her possible arrest for his murder,

There was no way to conjecture how long my mind would have swum round and round in these ever widening ripples of blame had not Sophie asked, âHarry, are you all right?â and snapped me out of it.
Both Sophie and Augie were looking at me so strangely that I could only respond with, âSure. Just peachy. How are you?â I then quickly continued, âSo, what can we do to help Belinda? Does she need a good lawyer? Does she have a good lawyer?â

âYes, I do. Bertie Griffin is a longtime friend of mine as well. Iâll certainly make sure that heâs notified.â
âThanks, Augie. Now do you think I can get out of here? I really do feel a whole lot better. If I can survive your erudite lecture on blood glucose levels, I believe I can survive anything.â
He smiled and said heâd arrange for my discharge at the desk. Shaking hands, he turned and left the room. Immediately thereafter, Sophie said, âWhatâs with you, Harry? Are you really all right? That was the weirdest expression Iâve ever seen on your face, and believe me Iâve seen plenty.â
âThat expression, I cringe to reveal, my dear Sophie, was pure, unadulterated Guilt. Yes, Guilt, with a capital gihh! Itâs an emotion thatâs not particularly familiar to me. No wonder it looked weird to you.â
âGuilt? For what?â
âOh, nothing much, just for ultimately being responsible for every rotten thing thatâs happened around here. If I hadnât chosen to make this happy little journey to rural America, none of this would have happened. You have to admit that.â
âI admit nothing. Harry, for a smart guy, youâre acting like a jackass. You may have a high opinion of yourself, but, I hate to spring it on you, youâre not God. You had no way of knowing any of this would happen. The death of Charlie (whether it
