When Sykes met Picot

Just as the Arab Revolt was getting under way, a British official, Sir Mark Sykes, met his French opposite number, Georges Picot. They drew up an agreement about what should happen to the Middle East if the Allies were to defeat the Turks (this wasn’t as remote a possibility as you might think). The Sykes–Picot Agreement, which was to be kept hush-hush until the war was over, stated that Russia should get land in the Caucasus and Kurdistan, France would get a large swathe of land across Syria, Lebanon and southern Turkey, and Britain would get a large area covering Palestine, Jordan (known then as Transjordan) and Mesopotamia. This secret agreement didn’t say a word about giving any land to Sherif Hussein and his Arabs.
