AFTER LEAVING WINTER in the street, Niki headed back toward the yacht, stopping to grab food on her way. She had no idea how long Stone would be with his associate and didn’t dare go searching for Maddox—even though she wished him dead. But she didn’t know how much she could believe. Sure, it was a shock to hear Winter was alive again, and his story made sense as to why Collar would make up his death in training. Everything fit like a jigsaw puzzle, but that’s just it, in the world of espionage the whole thing was just that, a puzzle. It was up to her to figure out which pieces fit together.

As she sat in the same café as Lara and Maddox had sat just moments ago, she scanned the menu quickly, deciding on the hearty dish of ratatouille. She never took her eye off the entrance of the harbor catty-corner from her current position.

But in her focus, she neglected to see him coming and certainly did not expect to have a visitor.

“Do you mind if I join you?” A harsh voice spoke from behind.

Niki whipped her head around, shocked to be recognized. When Jacobs dropped into the chair without invitation, Niki said, “You.” Did he see me with Mitch?

He scooted the chair close to the table. “Surprised?”

“Bewildered is more like it.”

“Well, let me enlighten you. Against my wishes, Stone thinks it wise to bring you onto his staff. I’m not convinced. I smelled agent on you since the beginning. The moment I laid eyes on you atop the sky lounge.”

Niki didn’t hesitate, she couldn’t if she wished to stay alive. “Agent? You mean like James Bond or something? Are you kidding? I hate those movies. All the clichés, pithy comebacks, and the way he treats women, forget it,” Niki said, secretly loving every one of them, with Connery being her favorite Bond and Thunderball her favorite movie.

“Then what are you?”

“What do you mean?” Niki played dumb.

“I mean, what’s someone like you doing working for Calm of the Sea? Seems beneath you.”

“What can I say, I love the water. Always have. Plus, it’s a way to pay my way through school.” That was believable enough, right?

“School, huh?”

“That’s right. You know like some place you go to learn, to get you ready for your future. Something that may have been good for a thug like you.”

Jacobs couldn’t help but laugh, which put her on edge. She looked around nervously, wondering what he found so funny. “You sure are one silly little girl, aren’t you? I don’t buy any of it. Your story is bullshit.” Jacobs lifted his silenced 9mm so Niki could see. Then he lifted the napkin from the table to cover it in case someone nearby was watching.

Niki clenched her jaw, wondering what she could do to make him believe. She was silent after being called out, but she needed to act quickly, and her next words could be the difference between life and death.

“Look, okay,” Niki shifted in her seat.
