Chapter 11

Donovan

‘I’ve never flown in a private jet before,’ Donovan said, looking around the cabin. ‘I mean, I’ve done it with my teams when we play on the road. But not on an airplane this small or fancy. This is seriously luxurious…’

Donovan wasn’t exaggerating.

This was the Doni private jet, or at least one of them, and it was every bit as luxurious as he’d imagined. From the super-comfortable reclining seats that came with inbuilt massage options to the various entertainment options on offer, it was like being in a flying apartment.

And all this was without mentioning the food, drink, and candy on offer. Clearly Danilo had made sure that the flight options would suit both Donovan and Taine. With some cigars and beer for Taine and a range of the most colorful candies and juice boxes for Donovan, it was like being at a party – except one that was taking place at fifteen-thousand feet.

‘These burgers are great,’ Donovan said, taking a huge bite from his fully loaded burger. ‘I guess that’s one thing they knew we’d both have in common.’

‘Damn right,’ Taine replied, eying up his burger before taking an equally large bite.

Donovan felt at ease with Taine when it came to food. Often Donovan would feel a little self-conscious around people who knew he was a Little. After all, it wasn’t every day that Littles would eat so much as he did. But with Taine it was different. Taine was a former athlete himself and knew all about what it took to fuel a large frame and calorie-hungry lifestyle.

In fact, Donovan was beginning to realize just how at ease he could feel with Taine. Sure, there was the undeniable age gap between them. There was nothing that could be done about the eleven years between them. But that didn’t even remotely feel like a big deal to Donovan.

And having initially felt a whole heap of resistance toward even working with him, Donovan was now seeing that not only could him and Taine have a professional relationship at the academy, but there could be a real personal connection too.

‘So, tell me,’ Taine asked, finishing off his burger impressively quickly. ‘Why the Ice Bears? The Doni family billions aside, that is.’

Donovan laughed.

It certainly was true that the Doni family offered great contracts. But his move to the Ice Bears had always been about more than that.

‘The money’s good, I’m not denying that,’ Donovan replied, sipping on his pineapple and mango juice box. ‘But… it’s way deeper. Firstly, I wanted to come and challenge myself at the most successful team. I was captain at my last team, and I loved it. But we were pretty much always second best to the Ice Bears. The Bears are like the pinnacle, you know?’

Taine nodded.

‘I get that,’ Taine replied, seemingly considering two things at once. ‘I know all about wanting to hit that mountain top in sport. It’s tough. You have to take your chances. Anyway. You said firstly, so I’m guessing there’s another reason too.
