The beat of the earth is strong, strong,

Forged from the roars of time.

Hum! Hum! Thrumming high.

It calls, we call, the voices.

“Maud, it’s the song!” Arthur whispered to her.

“Is it coming from the moths?”

He turned his head as though to locate the sound. “I don’t think so. It’s as though it’s traveling on the wind from that direction.”

Harriet scratched her head. “Is this the song you’ve been talking about? It’s beautiful.”

“You can hear it now?” asked Maudie. Everyone spoke softly, suddenly under the spell of what they were hearing.

“Yes!” said Hugo, his arms stretched wide in amazement. “I know it. It is the Firesong!”

“Harriet and Hugo can hear it too!” Arthur said, pulling Maudie onto a boulder so that they could hear where the song was coming from. The moths fluttered and danced rhythmically above, as though also under the spell of the song. There was no way they could single out Urania anymore.

“It’s coming from far off over there somewhere,” said Maudie, pointing north to the crater.
