A CLEAR DAWN MET THE HORIZON THE next morning. Bright sunrays cut through the chilly air of a winter trying to linger for too long. With the clear sky came hope. Talise never expected it to be easy, but standing before her soldiers again, entering the palace truly seemed possible.

She stood as tall as she could on a log to address her army. With the palace at the top of the mountain next to them, she merely spoke in a slightly louder voice than normal. Those near the front of the crowd, relayed her message to those behind, which continued until those at the very back had heard the words.

“When we fight today, we don’t do it for power. We do not fight for money or privilege or position. Instead, we fight for a better future. We fight to reunite families. We fight for equal opportunity.” She put a fist to her heart. “We fight for a better Kamdaria!”

When her fist raised into the air, every fist in the army mirrored it. Her heart thundered in her chest as she turned, but she held her head high.

The second march up the mountain felt different. Her soldiers were well rested. Her own heart and mind were well rested. Everyone in the crowd stomped forward with the knowledge that they had a way past the emperor’s fire storm. The only true difficulty would be getting past the palace doors.

Once they reached the top of the mountain, palace shapers slammed wind and rocks toward Talise and her friends. Just like they had the night before, Talise and her friends slapped the elements away with almost no effort at all.

In the morning light, they could better see how frightened their opponents looked. Even better, their opponents could see how confident Talise and her friends looked. They only fought for a few tense minutes before the palace shapers fell back.

The arrows rained down next, but everyone was ready for them. Blasts of air and shots of fire removed the arrows while Talise reached for the amulet inside her tunic pocket.

Her fingers squeezed the cool metal. Everything buzzed around her as the amulet sensed the elements. Holding both arms out to her sides, she slowly raised them up until her two fists met high above her head.

While her hands moved, two long walls of earth popped out of the ground. They stretched upward, eventually curving toward each other until they formed a long tunnel. She couldn’t hold the shaping in place once she got to the palace doors, but she held onto it for several moments. Hopefully then, the palace soldiers would stop trying to control the earth because they could tell her shaping had control of it already.

Shouts sounded all around them. Many came from below. Many came from above.

Puffs of heat burst above the ground’s surface, sizzling in the cold air. But so far, no fire burned around them. Claye’s plan was working. The earth tunnel was working.

When she stepped up to the palace doors, she finally released control of the earth tunnel.
