“Thank you for joining us.”

Marianne smiled at Lord Wright and then at Lord Castleton, trying her best to push aside her feelings of anxiety that seemed to swamp her every time she allowed her thoughts to fix on her parents. Being forced to behave in a manner expected by society was rather wearying and given that Lord Worthington had called upon her that very afternoon and had lingered for much longer than she had expected, Marianne found herself to be all the more fatigued. She was very glad indeed that she had no social occasion to attend that evening, although their planned discussion on her current situation was, she was sure, going to be somewhat taxing.

“But of course,” Lord Castleton replied quietly. “The dinner was most excellent.”

Marianne kept her smile fixed in place. “We would be glad to leave you to your port, gentlemen,” she said, rising quickly from her chair. “Please do join us in the drawing room when you are ready.”

She prayed now that he would not seek her out again in such an eager fashion, not when she had so many other things to contend with. The thought of her parents struggling and afraid, wherever they were, left a chill rushing through her as a hand squeezed her heart painfully. She wanted desperately to find them, to know where they were gone, and to restore them to their home and to their life but, as yet, she felt as though she could do nothing at all. Lady Voss had, of course, told
