Garrett eventually gathered the strength he needed to begin his navigation through the castle halls back to the stables. His body felt numb, and his thoughts were void of direction. He would go home only because his horse would be able to get him there without his help.

Regrets tore at his heart while the echo of Sir Mark’s words continually bombarded his mind. “I have no further need of you.”

It seemed like his life at the moment could be summed with that short phrase. I have no further need of you.

Sir Mark had been right when he had mentioned the other day that he had corresponded with his father during his exile. But most of the time, his father had only pressed him for details about events in the kingdom. It still tortured Garrett that the last letter he had supplied to his father had led to his father’s unfortunate capture and subsequent execution. If only he hadn’t written him to tell him that Abigail had fled across the great lake with Sir Christian.

And now Sir Robert had discarded him, taking Charlotte as well. He felt as he had the day his father had been executed. Abandoned. And he had only himself to blame.

He struggled with all his might to force Sir Mark’s haunting words from his mind. But he couldn’t.

He was just about to mount his horse when Derek’s voice stopped him.

“Garrett, you’re still here! Do you have that map with you by chance?”

Garrett closed his eyes briefly. The map had completely escaped his mind, and the last thing he needed was to be burdened by such a trivial matter. He looked over his shoulder and replied, “It’s still up in my room.”

“If you tell me where it is, I can get it myself if you have to be off right now,” Derek offered.

“There are a few maps you may consider. They are all together in a pile next to the blue atlas on my shelf. You can take them all.”

“Thank you. I’m very grateful. I’ll copy what I need and return them tomorrow.”
