Cyril’s basement window was open, and the air smelled good. Not warm yet, but it reminded him of what warm felt like. He’d only ever had one real conversation with his mother about his father. “I loved him,” she’d said. “I never felt anything like that before. I was who I was because of who he was. Who we were.” She’d stumbled over that. Cyril had been only twelve, but he’d known she was trying to tell him the whole truth of it. “It’s not like knowing God, baby. It is like being a complete human person. And then you came and made it perfect.”

“I hate him,” Cyril had said.

“God forgives. So must we.” She’d hugged him pretty hard then.

When he had a family, he’d never leave them.
