Mrs. Basurto is still silent as she walks ahead after picking up a basket outside the doors. She could have said we needed to pick some produce for breakfast this morning instead of giving me the silent treatment. I can barely keep up. She’s only a couple of inches taller than me, but she’s stomping fast between the rows of black pepper vines that have crawled higher than when I saw them last.

“Is Remy selling all these vegetables?”

A guard behind me laughs. Mrs. Basurto picks up her stride and I’m having to trot behind her to keep up. We get out into a clearing and there is a huge building off to the right I’ve never seen before. It looks like a warehouse.

Being distracted, I bump into a stopped Mrs. Basurto. She tumbles down and screeches, grabbing her side. She’s whimpering. I didn’t bump into her that hard.

“Where are you hurt?” I try to examine where she’s protecting her side, but she won’t let me.

I yell at the guards. “Go get help, you idiots.”

They stare down at us, not budging.

“I’ll tell my husband you did nothing to help me.”

That did it. One of them pulls out a walkie-talkie and makes a communication in Spanish into it. The other guard speaks to me in English. “Don’t move. Guards watching you. And drones.”

I check the sky but don’t see anything.

Both try to pick up Mrs. Basurto, but she fights them, despite her pain. I demand they leave her here and go fetch a stretcher. I don’t know if they understood me, but both guards leave us alone.

Mrs. Basurto is out of breath. She’s more injured than I thought.

“These are castor beans,” she says, handing me something in plastic wrap. “Take them. They’re poisonous.”

“What for? I’m not going to eat them.”

“To kill your husband.”

She lifts her head and that’s when I see the truth. Remy has done something to her and she wants him dead. I need Remy alive so I can learn more about his cartel. I’d like nothing more than to see him paraded back to the US and rot in jail rather than die too easily. Not only that, if I killed Remy, I’d be immediately executed myself.

“That building is a chemical lab. No, no, don’t look.” She moves herself to get more comfortable, but she’s still in pain. “They cook down the peppers to make piperidine for fentanyl. They also make ricin from the castor beans.”

How could I be so stupid? That’s why all the gardens and the workers; Remy is manufacturing his own drugs.

“They make everything here. Cocaine, heroin, meth, everything,” she says, out of breath. She keeps pressing on her side.

“Let me help you.”

She continues to push my hands away. “I have nothing left. My daughter is gone. My husband—”

“Is Aapo your husband?”

She raises her head.

Oh my God, Remy did something to Aapo. “What can I do to help?”

“Kill your husband, the way he killed mine.” She collapses down and cries uncontrollably.

I hear yelling and turn around. The two guards are returning, one of them carrying a wood and canvas stretcher.
