Chapter 10

Izzy stood in the dusty store and checked her watch impatiently. The tradesman she’d called a couple of days earlier to start work in the shop was at least half an hour late.

It had taken an entire day to go through the list of local tradespeople in the Rose’s big thick phone book, then call them all to find someone who was willing to make the trek to Brightwater to repair the store’s windows and then build shelves, not to mention do the electrical work needed. He’d promised her he was good to come out to Brightwater Valley, especially if she paid him extra for mileage, and now she was annoyed.

The whole no-service thing was turning out to be a major hurdle when it came to organizing what needed to be done in the store, since all of this stuff was far easier when you could just look it up on the internet. But unless she wanted to drive for an hour up that hideous road until she could get a signal, it was the good old-fashioned phone book for her.

Cait had spotted her poring over the thing and had made some comment about why didn’t she just ask someone for help, but Izzy didn’t want to.

She didn’t mention that Chase had already offered or that she’d refused. And it had nothing whatsoever to do with what had happened between them in Queenstown a week earlier.

Their little half an hour extra had turned into more, which then had involved having to rush to meet Indigo and Beth at the bank. They’d gotten a couple of strange looks, but neither woman had said anything then or since, so obviously they hadn’t picked up on something untoward happening between her and Chase.

Izzy was grateful. She didn’t want to go into detail about it with Beth and Indigo. She didn’t want to mention it at all. For the first time in her life, sex had felt like something that she could have for herself, that was about making her feel good as opposed to just her partner.

It had been Chase who’d made her feel that way, Chase who’d given that to her, and she didn’t want to share that with anyone else yet. It felt too private, too intimate, and somehow too precious.

Not exactly casual, was it?

No, which was a problem when casual was all it was supposed to be. Then again, she couldn’t pretend it hadn’t mattered to her or that it hadn’t been important.

It had made being in his general vicinity difficult, since every time she was, her body kept thinking all its Christmases had come at once. An annoying and distracting issue, and not at all helpful when she was supposed to be organizing a new business.

Chase, on the other hand, acted as if nothing had happened between them at all, treating her exactly the same as he’d treated her before, striding around with schedules and lists of “recommendations” and generally trying to manage things. It annoyed her, which was why she’d refused his help, thinking it would be best if she avoided him altogether.
