Jimmy picked me up the next day and I noticed immediately that he was dressed in all black.

“What the hell?” He said when I got into the car.

“What?”

“Why do you have a green shirt on?”

“It’s the only clean shirt I had.”

“Listen man, I need you to take this seriously. There are time-honored rules established for stakeouts and if you break them there could be hell to pay. Did you at least bring the Supersoaker?”

“Yup, got it right here.” I handed him the water gun and he pumped it a few times.

“You know I’m a surgeon with this shit, right?”

“Right,” I said as I looked away.

We started driving. I listened to the radio for a few moments before Jimmy turned it off.

“Listen man, I need you to be focused tonight.”

I looked at him.

“I am focused.”

“I’m not sensing focus at all. Look, it takes a wolf to catch a wolf and if you’re not a wolf, you’re a sheep and we don’t have any room for sheep in this car, you get me?”

“No, not at all.”

“Look just follow what I’m saying here. We can’t do this if you’re a sheep, you have to be a wolf. And to be a wolf you have to be wearing all black. Now you already messed that up so we’re going to go ahead and let that slide. But if you’re going to be a sheep than you’ll be the hero we want but the hero we don’t need, or whatever Gary Oldman says at the end of The Dark Knight.”

“Did you smoke PCP before you picked me up?”

Jimmy shook his head.

“I’m just trying to get you in the right mindset.”

“Why do need a mindset to drive by someone’s apartment building?”

We soon came upon Jenny’s apartment. There were no cars in her spot as we drove by.

“Ok, she isn’t home,” I said. “Let’s head to Denny’s.”

Jimmy parked in a visitor spot and said “kill the lights” to himself as he shut his brights off.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

Jimmy looked out of his window and then looked at me with wide eyes.

“We’re already here, let’s go up and see if she’s home.”

“What? Absolutely not. Have you lost it?”

He took the key out of his ignition.

“Alright, you stay here. I’ll go take a quick look. Maybe she isn’t home. Then again, maybe her car is in the shop and some guy took an Uber over here.”

“I have to be honest. I don’t want anything to do with what you’re talking about.”

“That’s cool. But if you’re going to just sit here, at least be on the lookout for security for me.”

“This is very stupid.”

“Let’s go over our code names.”

“What’s wrong with our regular names?”

“Fool. If the Syndicate catches us they will torture us for information and if they know our true identities, we are toast. Make that burnt toast!”

“Who is the ‘Syndicate?’”

“You’re on a need-to-know basis.”

“Can you stop messing around?”

Jimmy sighed.

“Ok fine, ruin my fun. But we’re doing the code names. I’m Belichick, and you’re Brady.”

“So this is ‘Operation Deflategate?’”

Jimmy laughed.
