Chapter 7: Just Another Day
The week following the weekend in New Orleans seemed to drag on. Everything was clinically mundane. My classes were achingly boring. Even my favorite classes seemed less exciting. Everything paled in comparison to the thoughts and daydreams I had about Luke.
I tried to fight them off. I made an honest effort, but I found myself drifting away in the middle of lectures. Iâd imagine myself in a fantasy world of nights on the couch watching television, dinners together at fine restaurants, walks through the park together, holding hands while driving somewhere, and a slew of other everyday things that seemed magical when I thought about doing them with him.
Somehow I managed to make it through my labs and turn in my homework on time. Thank goodness for that or I would have been in more trouble than I already was. I thought I was losing my mind. Every thought was finding its way to Luke. I would think of silly things and want to share them with him first. Even just seeing his name in my phone made me smile.
Clearly, I had lost my mind in the days after meeting Luke. There was no other reasoning to what was happening to me then. It was too soon to call it love. I thought it would be too soon to even call it a crush. It was for that reason that I declined his invite that weekend.
When Luke messaged me at the end of the week, I was falling apart waiting to hear from him. I had remembered him telling me he wanted to ask me out again. So I waited. It was around noon on Friday when I got his text.
âHey, Dane, itâs Luke. Still mad?â The text read.
âNot so much,â I responded.
âDoes that mean you might consider having drinks with me tonight?â The question had been asked.
I waited a while before answering.
âIâve got something I have to do this weekend. Maybe next.â I was nervous. I didnât want to push him away, but also didnât want to go flying into his arms like I knew I would if I were to see him that night.
âI understand. Message me if you feel up to it.â His text didnât have any kind of feeling, since it was a text. But I felt a certain sadness when reading it. Perhaps I had projected my own sadness. Either way, it set the mood for the rest of my weekend.
Later that night, Tom showed up around eight oâclock. âHey man, you okay? You look kinda bummed out.â
I must have been really looking bad for Tom to notice. âIâm good. Just a rough week. Scatterbrained. You know how it is.â
âOh yeah. I had a couple of those weeks before, didnât even know which way was up.â Tom laughed more to himself than to me.
I gently ignored him by pulling my phone up to my face. He got the hint and went to his bed.
Before giving up, however, he gave it one more try.
