CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I leaned against Jonas, letting him lead me away from the pain and anguish. The tears wouldn’t stop as we headed back to the inn.

My glamour slowly fell away, and I didn’t care. All I cared about was getting to Eros.

As we rounded the corner, Eros was munching on the grass in front of the inn. He sensed me and raised his head. I unwound myself from Jonas, raced to my stallion, and buried my face against his neck.

Jonas came up behind me. “Chelby, we need to go to the hospital.”

“I’m riding Eros.” It wasn’t a question. It was a statement.

I flung my leg over his back and looked down at Jonas, who had changed into my handsome mate.

“Okay. Wait for me while I get Zeus.” He waved his finger at me. “Don’t leave without me.”

I saluted him. “I won’t. I promise.”

Zeus was grazing farther out, and Jonas couldn’t ride him bareback like I did Eros.

The rest of the team reached the inn. Scott had blood on his shirt and looked at me wearily. He stayed close to Brody.

Justice headed over to me. “You’re going to ride Eros?”

“Yes.” A don’t-even-try-to-talk-me-out-of-it tone laced the single word.

“Then I’ll ride with you, too.” He patted Eros’ side.

It was as if my team was honoring me as they prepared their pegasi. Even Dr. Gould and the commander got on their mounts.

I scanned the street while I waited for the others, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Baka would be obsessed with getting the key and do anything to get it. The question remained. How did my father get it? Did Father have it? Or did someone else have it?

The street was empty. Not even a single car passed the inn. No one walked on the sidewalk. Was this normal?

The sun had sunk lower, and the shadows had gotten longer. I stared at the shadows, wondering if Baka or his daughter Maci were hiding.

Jonas rode up beside me on Zeus. “Are you ready?”

I drew a deep breath and nodded silently, my battered heart thumping in my chest. I stroked Eros’ sleek feathers and gently nudged his side with my heel. With an earth-shattering leap, he spread his massive wings and took off into the sky. The wind rushed past my ears. Despite the danger of the invisibility spell potentially wearing off, I smiled at the thrill of riding Eros. It always had a way of numbing the pain inside me.

Durango wasn’t a big city. It was easy to spot the large hospital on the outskirts. The complex loomed in the distance, its lights beginning to show amid the deepening dusk. The single bright star visible this early felt unusually distant tonight, its light dimmed by the shadow of sorrow that hung over us.

I wondered if one of the stars was my father looking down at me. Was he with my mother now? Were they happy? I hoped so. This life hadn’t been kind to them. Hopefully, the next one would give them peace and joy.
