A NIGHT IN THE DEATH ZONE

BECK WEATHERS

Most people would consider Beck Weathers a very lucky guy—even before he survived a harrowing near-death experience on the highest mountain in the world. He had a successful career as a pathologist—a doctor who studies how diseases affect our bodies. He had money. He lived in a comfortable suburb of Dallas, Texas. He was married with two kids, and he loved his family.

But Weathers didn’t feel lucky. He felt empty. He felt like something was missing. Weathers had depression—he called it “the black dog.”14 At times he thought of suicide.

Instead, he threw himself into activities to try to fill the empty space inside him. He became interested in CB radios, motorcycling, and sailing. And then, when he was 40, he took a climbing trip in Rocky Mountain National Park. From then on, he was hooked on mountain climbing. Climbing was the one thing that gave him true peace and happiness. When you’re climbing, he said, “Everything else in your entire life disappears, and it’s just one step after the other.”15
