CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Sid leaned comfortably against the side of the fireplace, and grinned cheerfully at Rose, ignoring the sour look he received in turn and raising his beer glass slightly in salute.

“We’ve been down the Crown and Trumpet, Flash, and I think we can sort you out.”

Rose was sitting with Granny and Belle, and now she tilted her head, eyes turning with interest to Sid. “Oh? Sort Flash out? What with, Sid?”

Silently Rose groaned, oh good Lord…

Jacko looked uncomfortable but Sid was unfazed. “We’re a bit worried about Flash. Him being a virgin and all.”

Granny’s eyebrows steepled, “What? What? I didn’t know about this! You told me you weren’t!” Belle smiled secretly, and Rose blushed under her knowing gaze.

Sid nodded, “I know. I was shocked an’ all when I found out. I should’ve told the AOC but with Flash being a mate, I couldn’t do it. We ain’t grasses down the East end.”

Rose rolled his eyes, “Yes, alright. Shut up, will you? You’ve had your little bit of fun, little bit of a laugh. Haven’t you something better to do?”

Sid frowned, “Laugh? No, mon pauvre chien, this is very serious. I could be in hot water with the AOC if he knew I wasn’t reporting a squadron commander who hadn’t got his leg over!” he squinted through the tobacco smoke at Rose.

“Leg over,” Jacko agreed anxiously.

“How are you going to sort him out, then?” Belle asked intently.

“We been talking to Gertie down the Crown and Trumpet, y’know, the barmaid? turns out she hasn’t got a bloke. Just imagine, Flash, pints of beer every evening then a shag after,” he looked at Belle, adding hurriedly, “’Oh, um, ‘scuse me, ma’am.”

Her face was serious, “No, that’s alright, Sid. It’s commendable that you’re so concerned about your CO’s welfare.” She nodded with approval, “Quite right, too.”

Jacko sighed wistfully, “Buckets of beer and a shag after…”

Belle looked amused, and Granny puffed out his cheeks, “Gertie? Wasn’t she a barmaid there back in 1914? During the first little lot? She’s a couple of years older than Flash, isn’t she?”

More like thirty...

Trying to disguise his glee, his CO added, “But then, I believe he likes a mature woman, don’t you my old pair of frilly drawers?”

Rose gave him a sour look. Molly’s five years older...

Sid sighed insincerely, “Well, I’m sorry, I am really, but, Cripes! Stone me! Take a gander at his mug! Take a good look! Poor sod! He ain’t much to look at, is he? Face only a mother could love. Sorry, Flash, old mate, but beggars can’t be choosers, can they?”

Jacko shook his head sadly, “Can’t be choosers.”

Sid beamed reasonably, held up a finger, “I mean, you can’t polish a turd, can you?”

His shadow whispered apologetically. “Turd.”

“And think of all the free beer he’d get!”

“Free beer!” sighed Jacko again.

Rose considered whether it was worth throwing his teacup at Sid and Jacko, but then, it wouldn’t really do to throw one’s cup (and its contents) at two of one’s flight commanders, would it? At least, not in a crowded Mess in front of one’s Wing Commander.
