THIRTY-SIX

Hannah parked her Mercedes next to Deputy Hepworth’s SUV. The deputy himself stepped out from the house and began walking toward them. Redd thought Hepworth looked a little guilty as he waved to the two of them.

Redd figured it was because he had been inside the house without permission, but then he noticed the deputy’s eyes flitting back and forth between Hannah and him and realized there was something more going on. He recalled that when Hepworth had called Hannah, the ID had read Shane.

Redd wondered just how well the two knew each other.

“The door was open, so I poked my head inside,” Hepworth said. “Looks like they trashed your place pretty good from what I could see.”

Redd didn’t need to see it again.

“Probably tweakers,” Hepworth went on. “County’s crawling with them.” He clicked his tongue, disgusted. “They’re running Stillwater County into the ground. We can’t do anything about it unless we catch them with stolen goods.”

“This time they did more than just steal,” Hannah said. “They could have killed Matt.”

Hepworth nodded. “They were probably raiding the barn when you showed up and figured the only way out was through you.”

A memory hit Redd like a lightning bolt. He wheeled and ran toward the barn. Hannah and the deputy were right behind him. The exertion set his skull throbbing, but he ignored the pain until he reached the bloody spot where he’d fallen.

“What is it, Matt?” Hannah asked.

“The Ruger. J. B.’s Magnum. I had it on me when I got attacked. It’s gone. They have it.”

Hepworth put his hands on his hips. “Well, that’s not good. You’re lucky they didn’t drill you with it. But I imagine they saw something like that as a big score.” The deputy paused a beat. “I’ll need a list of what’s missing. That’ll help if something turns up at a pawnshop, and it’ll help you with insurance.”

“I don’t know if J. B. even had insurance. I’ll have to check.”

“Well, you let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.”

Redd nodded dully.

“Do you need our help getting your place back together?” Hannah asked.

Redd saw a momentary flicker of anger in Hepworth’s eyes. He really wasn’t happy that Hannah was here with him.

“Thanks, but I’ll manage.”

Hepworth checked his watch. “Well, I gotta run. Get me that list as soon as you can.” He turned to Hannah. “You leaving too? I can get the gate for you.”

She smiled at him, but it wasn’t a warm smile. “I’m going to say hi to Remington.”

“Okay.” Hepworth turned to Redd. “See you around, Matt.”

As Hepworth left them, Redd turned to Hannah. “Are you two together?”

She leaned close. “Do you see anything in my eyes to suggest that?”

“No. But it was his eyes I was watching. He was a real lady-killer in high school. Starting quarterback.”

“High school was a long time ago.” She held his gaze. Her eyes were both playful and challenging. “For both of you. And we’re all grown-up now.”

Redd didn’t miss the dig at his relationship with Emily.
