Chapter Eight

Derek Rutherford entered BTs. Rachel almost did not recognize him. Her Groundhog was not the same as he’d always been. He wore a crew neck sweater with jeans, no sunglasses, and his hair messed. In the fifteen seconds it took for Derek to reach Rachel at the counter, not only did he take her breath away, but she felt herself blush. The crew neck sweater, in a soft pale blue, drew out his eyes; she couldn’t believe she didn’t notice them before. But then again, he’d always worn sunglasses. The sweater fit him like a glove and left her imagination to believe there was next to nothing beneath it. His low-waisted, faded blue jeans were sexy, yet masculine, and yelled out loads of attitude. Rachel’s mind only further imagined that those jeans flattered his rear assets. Before he made it to the counter, she tried to regain her composure, realizing what had just crossed her mind. Never in her life had she ever thought of a man that way. She cleared her throat.

“Mr. Rutherford, it is good to see you again.”

“Hi,” he quietly said, without a smile. At least that part remained the same. She had never seen him smile, but then it dawned on her; she had never seen him without his phone attached to his ear either. A silent chuckle of the time Rose first described him to her. It appeared he still was not in a sociable way, so she simply asked him if would like the usual. Then she was caught off guard, for the first time with him, he smiled at her.

“You remember?”

“Of course I do, it’s my business.” She returned the smile. As she prepared his bagel and coffee, she thought of his gentle warm smile, and that he should smile more often. He always appeared so serious. She handed him his bagel and coffee and noticed he had not left his five-dollar bill on the counter, as usual. She hesitated on whether to say something, but her heart told her not to. He looked flustered. She hoped nothing terrible had happened. He thanked her politely and walked out the door. She shrugged it off.

“Was that our Groundhog?”

Allan came out of the kitchen. Derek had just left and not just physically; he had left a burning impression in her mind. She surprised herself and watched him walk out and confirmed that his jeans definitely flattered his rear assets. Bringing herself back to reality, she turned to Allan with a simple, “Yeah, that was him.” She continued on into the kitchen without another word.
