âWhat do you mean, ânothingâ?â said Vimes. âItâs got to be the book! He licks his fingers to turn a page, and every day he gets a little dose of arsenic! Fiendishly clever!â
âSorry, sir,â said Cheery, backing away. âI canât find a trace. Iâve used all the tests I know.â
âYouâre sure?â
âI could send it up to the Unseen University. Theyâve built a new morphic resonator in the High Energy Magic Building. Magic would easilyââ
âDonât do that,â said Vimes. âWeâll keep the wizards out of this. Damn! For half an hour there I really thought Iâd got itâ¦â
He sat down at his desk. Something new was odd about the dwarf, but again he couldnât quite work out what it was.
âWeâre missing something here, Littlebottom,â he said.
âYes, sir.â
âLetâs look at the facts. If you want to poison someone slowly youâve either got to give them small doses all the timeâor, at least, every day. Weâre covered everything the Patrician does. It canât be the air in the roomâyou and I have been in there every day. Itâs not the food, weâre pretty sure of that. Is something stinging him? Can you poison a wasp? What we needââ
ââScuse me, sir.â
Vimes turned.
âDetritus? I thought you were off-duty?â
âI got dem to give me der address of dat maid called Easy like you said,â said Detritus, stoically. âI went up dere and dere was people all lookinâ in.â
âWhat dâyou mean?â
âNeighbors and dat. Cryinâ women all roundâ der door. Anâ I remember what you said about dat dipplo wordââ
âDiplomacy,â said Vimes.
âYeah. Not shoutinâ at people anâ dat. I fought, dis look a delicate situation. Also, dey was throwinâ stuff at me. So I came back here. I writ down der address. Anâ now Iâm goinâ home.â He saluted, rocked slightly from the force of the blow to the side of his head, and departed.
âThanks, Detritus,â said Vimes. He looked at the paper written in the trollâs big round hand.
â1st Floor Back, 27 Cockbill Street,â he said. âGood grief!â
âYou know it, sir?â
âShould. I was born in that street,â said Vimes. âItâs down below the Shades. Easyâ¦Easyâ¦Yesâ¦Now I remember. There was a Mrs. Easy down the road. Skinny woman. Did a lot of sewing. Big family. Well, we were all big familiesâit was the only way to keep warmâ¦â
He frowned at the paper. It wasnât as if it were any particular lead. Maidservants were always going off to see their mothers, every time there was the least little family upset. What was it his granny had used to say? âYer sonâs yer son till he takes a wife, but yer daughterâs yer daughter all yer life.â Sending a Watchman around would almost certainly be a waste of everyoneâs timeâ¦
âWell, wellâ¦Cockbill Street,â he said. He stared at the paper again. You might as well rename the place Memory Lane. No, you couldnât waste Watch resources on a wild-goose chase like that. But he might look in. On his way past. Some time today.
âErâ¦Littlebottom?â
âSir?â
âOn yourâ¦your lips. Red. Er. On your lipsâ¦â
âLipstick, sir.
