Images and thoughts and pain clattered around in my mind.

Nothing seemed focused.

After I had eaten half a bowl of soup—that’s what I was doing, eating soup—my brain settled, things clicking into place.

Oh, right.

My life was falling apart.

Powers I couldn’t manage or control buzzed through me.

I had a job I wasn’t able to do.

I had people that wanted to kill me.

And Telanes.

My heart tore.

“I can’t eat anymore.” I shifted the tray. My hands trembled and Daron took it.

He heaved a great sigh and leaned down on his legs. Alec stood across the room, his arms crossed, his expression heavy in an unfamiliar way.

“Faye, what’s going on?” Daron said.

“I don’t know.” Tears pricked my eyes.

“You have a history of this.”

“Of what?”

“Of giving and giving until you exhaust yourself and not asking for help when you require it. And of pushing others away when you need them.”

I shook my head. It pounded. Was there anything in life that didn’t hurt anymore?

Daron’s moccasins sank into the thick rug at his feet. “Why did you send Telanes away?”

“It’s hard to explain.”

“Do you love him?”

“What kind of question is that?”

He leaned in closer. “Answer me.”

My voice came shaky. “Of course I love him.”

“Then why send him away?”

“Did Alec tell you I burned him?” Daron’s eyebrows raised. I clenched my fingers into the spongy arm of the couch. “When I have nightmares, my magic leaks. I’ve hurt him before, but never as bad. And the dissenting dragons want to kill him too. He’s safer away from here. He’s better off.”

“No, Faye, that’s not how relationships work.” Daron shifted his entire body towards me and I sank with the movement, my arm pressing against his. “When your mate is going through something, you deal with it together. You compromise. You go through hardships as a team.”

I bowed my head. “He’s in danger with me and miserable.”

“Life isn’t about being happy every minute of the damn day. If you love someone, then you face the hard times with them. You don’t force them away.” His eyes narrowed. “And you don’t leave them.”

“Telanes had no choice, he—”

“Oh, I’ll deal with Telanes later,” Daron said, cutting me off. “I’m talking about you right now. And we are starting with this. You will eat and drink every day.”

“I just—”

He grasped my hand and ran his thumb along the back of it. I stopped speaking and looked up at him. His gaze shone as earnestly as I’d ever seen it.

“Enough, Faye. You must take care of yourself. You have to meet some of your own needs. Say no some; delegate.”

“I don’t know how to do that.”

“Then it’s time to learn.” Daron sighed. “Do you want Telanes to come back?”

“He shouldn’t.”

Daron shook his head. “That’s not what I’m asking you.”

“Of course I want him. But, it’s not for his good.”

Daron pressed his fingers to his temples. “Faye, you need beings around you that you trust and who love you. If moving here has shown me anything, it’s that Alec and I let ourselves get too distant.
