Sixteen

LEO

My wolf senses told me to leave work and head home. I ignored the intuitive pokes initially. We had too much work to do for me to knock off early. But after I’d hung another sheet of dry wall, my arms were literally shaking with the stress of ignoring my instincts.

“Okay. Okay. Fine.” I conceded to whatever was driving me to leave the apartment.

Instead of racing straight home, I grabbed my cell phone and called Mom. It rang for ages, then she hung up on me. I chuckled and tried again, knowing that she was struggling with the new technology.

On the third try she answered. “Hello… hello! Is someone there?”

“Yeah Mom, its Leo.”

“Leo! This phone…”

“I know Mom, I know. It’s all good. I was just ringing to ask if Mason was home.” I wasn’t sure why I asked her such a question, I could have just rung my brother directly.

“No, sweetheart. I told him to go see Tania. I think he went to her gym.”

My wolf senses roared to life. I glanced at my watch. It was almost nine o’clock. I needed to hustle. “Thanks Mom.”

I stripped off my overalls and threw on a T-shirt and jeans. Then I jumped in my truck and planted my foot on the gas. They were together. I could feel it. And something felt… wrong.

Well, not exactly wrong, but it was the easiest way to describe the unease that was racing through my system.

I made it to the gym within minutes. The woman behind the desk was just closing down the computer and I could tell she was about to lock up for the night. “Hey! Is my brother still here?”

She glanced up and met my gaze. “Ah… I’m not sure.”

“Is Tania here?” I asked. “He should be with her.”

The woman glanced over her shoulder. “Tania’s up in her apartment.”

“Great,” I said, not sure where exactly that was, but I was going to bluff my way through. “I’ll go see if they’re still here.”

“Oh… ah…”

I jogged past her and went straight to Tania’s office, letting my instincts lead the way. The moans of pleasure and soft gasps hit me first.

I clenched my jaw tight, anger and jealousy ripping through me.

Take a breath.

I closed the office door gently so I didn’t alert them to my presence, then hustled back over to the reception desk where the woman had suspicion written all over her face. I forced a smile to my lips and told her, “Mason and Tania are upstairs. I think I’ll join them.”

She nodded slowly. “Okay. Tell Tania I’ve locked up.”

She was clearly reluctant to leave and I grinned at the protectiveness of the woman. Sensing she was also a witch, I said, “Don’t worry. Tania’s magic can knock both of us on our asses. We won’t hurt her.”

The woman finally smiled. “Okay. Good night.”

I turned back to the office and jogged over to the room, stepped in and shut the door behind me.

My heart was hammering in my chest and I paused with my foot on the first step.
