Erich Brandt

October – November 1939

19

Erich had watched the start of the parade route from his car, towards the beginning where the old Polish kings used to march. The moment the Fuhrer passed he took a detour away from the main parade route so he could cut across the city to meet Hitler at the Saxon Palace. Hans Frank sat in the back of the armoured car with him behind their driver.

“Do you think the Fuhrer will speak to me today?” said Frank.

“I expect he will. Remember he did personally extend an invitation to you. If I had to take a guess I would say that this could be the day that he decides on the person who will control Poland on his behalf.”

Erich didn’t miss Frank straighten up. He decided to press his advantage. A man like this on his side could help him get closer to Kindler. He must be keeping his guards close now. He will have heard of the death of Katterfeld by now, making it harder than before to get to him.

He leaned closer to Frank to keep their conversation from his driver. “You know, Hans, you shouldn’t fear that you won’t get this position. Your work as a lawyer has helped countless members of the party. Without you a lot of good men would have been in prison. The Fuhrer doesn’t forget his friends.”

Frank laughed. “You are a good friend to have, Erich. Yes, you are right. The Fuhrer never forgets. The Fuhrer is never wrong.”

Erich leaned back, happy that he had planted a few seeds in the man’s mind. Frank was no fool and wouldn’t bow to petty threats. He had made his name as one of the best lawyers in the country. This immensely intelligent man knew more than he let on.

The car drove at a stinging pace towards the Saxon Palace. Erich was overawed by the scene before him. Soldiers in striking uniforms awaited his arrival. Erich got out of the car and saluted the contingent of SS men on parade. Only the most effective members of the organisation had been chosen for this great honour.

“Where is the Fuhrer?” said Frank.

Blaskowitz strode over to them and saluted. “Herr Oberstgruppenfuhrer, a pleasure to meet you at last. And this must be Herr Frank. The Fuhrer informed me that he would want to see you personally.”

Frank puffed his chest out. “It is an honour, to be sure. I have had the pleasure of meeting the Fuhrer on a number of occasions.”

Blaskowitz turned to Erich. “The Fuhrer’s parade has almost been completed. He has departed from Nowy Swiat with no problems reported. He should be here in mere minutes.”

“And the men are ready?” Erich had ordered his men to report to the Wehrmacht today. But only for now.

“Spotless and shining. The Fuhrer will be proud to see his men in such high spirits. I do have someone I would like you to meet afterwards. Herr Robert Wesolowski. He’s a prominent member of the city and he will help us to keep order.
