Sung Household

Suwon-si, Republic of Korea

Sergeant Carl “Niner” Sung leaned back in his chair and groaned in ecstasy as he slowly chewed his grandmother’s barbecue. His head lolled to the side at his best friend sitting beside him, Sergeant Leon “Atlas” James. “Didn’t I tell you she’s the best cook in the world?”

Atlas continued to attack the meal, his plate continually topped up by Niner’s female relatives, none of them letting him, Atlas, or Sergeant Gerry “Jimmy Olsen” Hudson go hungry. The meal had been ongoing for at least two hours, and Niner swore he had the meat sweats, but he was afraid to stop.

It might insult the cadre of cooks.

One thing he had learned the last time he visited here was that the meal didn’t stop until the food ran out. The problem was he wasn’t accustomed to eating like this. Sure, he would attack a pizza on occasion, but as part of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment—Delta, or as the common person on the street called it, the Delta Force, he had to be in peak shape all the time. Eating like this was not something he did.

Yet his muscled friend Atlas was just treating it like he was carbo-loading for an extended session with the weights. Jimmy, appearing equally stuffed, glanced at their large friend then reached over and squeezed a massive bicep.

“Are these muscles or extra stomachs?”

“Can’t talk, eating,” replied Atlas as he took another mouthful, the empty space on his plate immediately filled by an alert cousin. He paused then gave both of them a stern look. “If either of you mentions any of this to Vanessa, they won’t find the bodies.”

Niner grunted. “Sure they will. They’ll just have to pump your stomach.”

Atlas rolled his eyes, tossing his head back. “Sooo good. I’m leaving here with recipes. I have to have Vanessa make this for me.”

“I doubt they’ll give them up. Family secrets.”

“Ask.”

“They won’t—”

“If you want to live to see the morning, you ask and you ask now.”

Niner grinned at Jimmy as Atlas leaned forward, continuing the impressive show. Niner turned to his grandmother, switching to Korean. “My friend wants the recipes for all this. His girlfriend is a chef, and he wants her to cook this for him when he gets back home.”

She firmly shook her head. “No. Family only.”

Niner put an arm over Atlas’ shoulders and Jimmy looked at him, concerned. “Niner, buddy, your hand is getting a little close to his mouth. Careful.”

Niner moved his hand but didn’t remove his arm. “But, Grandma, he is family. This man has saved my life more times than I can count. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be here today.”

His grandmother pursed her lips, regarding the eating-machine, then threw her hands up in the air. “All right! All right! He’s family, he gets the recipes.”

Niner smiled and leaned over, giving her a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you, Grandma!” He turned to Atlas, switching back to English. “You’re part of the family now. She’s giving you the recipes.
