CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

An hour and a half later, I walked through the front double-glass doors of the hotel feeling relieved to have gotten to Tehran with no problems. With Qom in my rearview, things were noticeably different here in Iran’s capital city. I had a larger population to hide behind and, being so close to the University, I expected to move easier and without as much curiosity as I had received in Qom.

On my way to the front desk, I caught a few heads turn in my direction. No one stared or looked at me like I didn’t belong. It was more casual awareness than anything else.

The woman working the front desk welcomed me with a smile and I set the scabbard down at my feet, asking, “Do you have anything available for tonight?”

“Do you have reservations?”

I told her I didn’t and watched her go to work on her computer. It was afternoon and there was still plenty of daylight left, but I needed to lie low, go over my plan, and then track down Hamid so that I could figure out the best way to take him into custody without anyone alerting The Ghost to my new location.

Another hotel employee entered the room and stole a quick glance in my direction. There was something about his expression that had me feeling like I might not be as safe here as I thought. I was the first to look away. Quietly, I asked the woman searching for vacancy, “Is there a problem?”

She said politely, “Almost there.”

I was doing my best to not let my impatience get the best of me, but it was the other employee’s sudden interest in me that had me feeling especially tense. A picture of the Supreme Leader hung on the back wall and I tried to catch a reflection of the computer screen in the glass. I had nothing.

The woman’s bright eyes found me, and she asked, “Are you sure you only want to stay one night?”

“Did I say one night?”

She nodded.

“You better make that two.” I smiled.

She arranged two nights and, after I paid in cash, she requested to make copies of my passport. It was standard procedure when renting rooms to foreigners. Then she gave me the keycard to my room and I headed to the elevator with the male employee still busy burning a hole in the back of my head.
