Darcy
Stepping out of the house, I pull the wheels of my suitcase up, so they go over the threshold of my front door. Tim is right behind me, with his bag. He is locking up while I walk to the car. Iâve been dreading this trip home for Thanksgiving. Tim and I made a deal when we got married that I had to go home and visit every other year for the holidays. So Yippee⦠this was the year I had to go home and pretend to be happy. To be so interested in everyone blah blah blah⦠I already have the trip planned. We get to Timâs parents tonight. Then weâll have Thanksgiving with his family at 12 and Thanksgiving with my family at 5. Then we stay there for the night and head home first thing Friday morning. I recline my chair back and try to sleep for the drive home, sad that the only thing missing from this trip would be any form of alcohol.
The nice thing about Timâs house is I can usually slip away unnoticed and watch old westerns with his dad, in the den. His father likes to prop his legs up in his favorite recliner. Nobody usually bothers him as he can be known to be quite grumpy. Although, I think this is just a ruse to keep his overexcitable wife and children at armâs length. I can only stand being around them for a short time. Timâs mother sometimes reminds me of one of those little jack russell dogs who just run around excited all day long. Tim and his sister must have inherited that gene from her, as they are now in the kitchen making cookies and chatting incessantly. I donât know how this man survived growing up with them and their constant cheeriness. We have a mutual respect for each other. We both like our space and the peace and quiet.
The next morning goes the same way, until Tim comes in to let us know everything is ready. Annoyed because I was actually getting into this scene, I reluctantly get up to go eat. Of course, the table is set up like the cover of a magazine and I donât understand all the fuss. One year Tim and I made chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese for Thanksgiving. Tim tried to make a turkey, but by dinner time, the thing was still raw in the middle. We gave up on that. He is horrible at cooking and I lack the motivation to actually try. Plus, all the dishes and food just doesnât make sense for two people.
Timâs father puts his hands together to say grace. Tim suddenly interrupts him. His father raises an eyebrow, at him, as if to say this better be good.
âSorry to cut you off, Dad. I was hoping to say the prayer this time. Lord, thank you for this time with family and the wonderful dinner we have prepared. Bless it and nourish us, Amen. I also want to just say Darcy and I have some news to share with you.
