CHAPTER 7

IN IT TO WIN IT

The next week, the Badgers played the Jaguars from Claudia Jones Middle School. Ricky started at shooting guard again.

The ref blew his whistle and tossed the ball up. The Jags won the tip-off. Ricky and his teammates fell back on defense.

Ricky’s man was a little shorter than him, but he was very strong under the basket. He played rough, shoving his way across the key.

In the corner, he gave Ricky an elbow. No one saw. The Jag point guard fired him a line-drive pass.

At the last moment, though, Ricky stepped in front of his man and knocked the pass away, right into Levi’s hands.

The Badgers took it fast down the court. The Jags hurried back on defense. Davis’ long legs got him to the basket first. He grabbed Levi’s pass out of the air and tossed the ball into the hoop for the game’s first two points.

As the Badgers jogged back, Davis gave Ricky a high-five. “Nice steal,” Davis said.

“Nice basket,” Ricky said.
