Damian

It’s been three days, and I haven’t been home once. Between the garage and spending the night with Layna and Indigo, there’s been no time until now.

When I open my front door, the smell of something rotten hits me like a truck. Great, I must have put something in the trash, and it’s been sitting here for three days fermenting. I round the corner and stop in my tracks when I see a woman’s bare leg hanging off my couch. Slowly, I step closer taking in the mop of blonde wavy hair, short cutoffs, and red t-shirt with STP across the back.

Mollie Bradford. What the hell is she doing on my couch? I kick the corner jolting her awake, and she slowly rolls over squinting into the bright sunlight streaming through the patio doors.

“What the fuck, Mollie? How did you get in here? Why are you here?”

She smiles wide stretching her arms over her head and pointing her toes. “Hi, Damian, where’ve ya been? I miss you.”

“You didn’t answer my questions, Mollie.”

Her face falls into a pout. “Why are you so grouchy this morning? Can’t a girl stop by to see her favorite friend with benefits?”

“Not when the friend isn’t invited and especially when that friend breaks into my home.”

“It’s not like you’ve been here much. Do you smell that? Yuck.” She wrinkles up her nose.

Mollie and I have been an on-again-off-again thing for years, but I haven’t seen her for at least six months. She’s a garage rat I used to hook up with once a month before she decided she was going to move in with one of her other friends with benefits. He wasn’t into sharing.

“Yes, I smell it. I’ve been staying somewhere else. I need you to leave. I have to air this place out and get to the garage. If you have a key to my place, hand it over.”

She stands up and walks to the sliding door, opens it and closes it. “You don’t know how to lock your doors. Anybody could be squatting in here. You should be more careful.”

“You’re right, I wouldn’t want some crazy stalker chick crashing on my couch when I’m not home.” I toss my keys into a brass bowl on the entry table and set down my phone before heading into the kitchen to collect the trash.

“You’re staying somewhere else? I thought Damian Ricci was the eternal bachelor.”

“Was is right. I’m taken now, so you can get going and tell anybody else you know that I used to sleep with that I’m off the market, for good.”

Her face lights up. “You got married?” She bounces across the room and grabs my left hand to look for a ring. I snatch my hand away.

“No, I’m not married, but I’m in a serious relationship, okay?”

She wraps one arm around her small waist and rests the other elbow on it with her hand under her chin thinking hard. “What happened to you? Monogamy was never your thing, neither were relationships.” She gasps.
