CHAPTER 8
When Kristy gets a great, hot, new idea, she never waits around for it to grow cold. And now, she had two ideas to work on – Christmas in summer and my going-away party. The very next day, Saturday, she called a special planning meeting to get them both in gear.
The meeting was held in our barn, the one with the secret passage to my room. Just for fun, everyone met at the house and went to the barn through the passage.
“This special meeting will come to order,” Kristy announced at one o’clock sharp. We sat in a circle on the dusty wood floor. Mary Anne had baked some chocolate chip cookies, which we passed around. She’d also sliced up apples for Stacey and me.
In the morning, while she was making the cookies, I’d come into the kitchen and offered to help.
“No, thanks,” she told me without looking up from the chips she was pouring into a measuring cup. “I have it under control.” She spoke in the same completely neutral, expressionless voice in which she’d talked to me since our fight Friday afternoon.
She wasn’t exactly giving me the cold shoulder, but she wasn’t being particularly nice, either. It was as if I’d hurt her so deeply that any feelings she had toward me – both the positive and the negative ones – had disappeared. It was weird.
“The first thing we should do is make up a guest list,” said Kristy. “Mary Anne, since you’re secretary, you write it down. Okay?”
“All right. I brought a pen and pad,” Mary Anne replied.
“Are we inviting kids?” asked Mallory.
“What do you think, Dawn?” Kristy asked. “It’s your party.”
“Well, we could.”
“No,” Stacey disagreed. “If we invite kids we’ll have to look after them and it will be more like a big baby-sitting job than a party.”
“I agree,” said Claudia, taking two cookies from the plate. “No kids.”
“There are eight of us,” said Mary Anne. “Nine including Logan. Who else?”
“Robert,” said Stacey.
“Ben,” added Mallory.
“Bart,” said Kristy, mentioning a boy she likes a lot, who is sort of her boyfriend.
“That’s twelve,” said Mary Anne.
“What about Emily Bernstein?” Claudia suggested. Emily is the editor of the school newspaper.
“Definitely,” I said. I like Emily a lot.
We kept naming names until we were up to twenty guests. “I think that’s enough,” said Kristy. I agreed.
After that, we discussed what to serve at the party. “I suppose it will have to be healthy.” Mary Anne sighed.
I was about to suggest pizza, but didn’t. Mary Anne and I never did make our pizza and I was reluctant even to bring up the subject. “We could have some veggie, healthy stuff and some not,”
I said instead. “The way we always do it.”
Claudia and Mallory agreed to be in charge of decorations. Kristy and Mary Anne would get the invitations out. Shannon and Jessi said they’d coordinate refreshments. Stacey volunteered to take charge of music. “What should I do?” I asked.
“Nothing. You’re the guest of honor,” Kristy said. “Technically, you shouldn’t even be here, but we needed to know whom you’d like invited.
