CHAPTER 19

“Barnabas Walker, are you paying attention to me?” asked Mom. Her voice cut through my memory of when I had jumped the log and busted my tire.

“Yes, ma’am, I know I need to buy the tire,” I said, thinking quickly, “but that’s why I need a job. I have to finish saving enough money for the tire, and then I need to save some more for the game camera, and I’m gonna keep some for when it rains.”

Billie and Silas looked at each other with curious expressions, and then I saw them shrug. I was glad to see I wasn’t the only one who didn’t understand the rainy-day thing.

“Well, can we go up the road?” I asked. “Billie and Silas know how to get there, and they said they’d go with me. I really need a job so I can buy a game camera to see all the bears and other animals we have around here—and to buy my tire.”

Mom had a concerned look on her face and I thought she was about to say no, but then she looked at Dad. He gave her one of those looks that told her I was a boy, and boys would do things that would worry their moms sometimes, but that everything would be okay. At least, that’s what I always thought that look meant.

Before saying anything, Mom walked over to me and hugged me. I didn’t know what it was for at first, but then she leaned back and looked down at me.

“Where, oh where did my little boy go?”

I was confused. I thought maybe she had gotten some cleaning supplies in her eyes and gone blind. “I’m right here, Mom,” I said. “I’m standing in front of you.”

“Yeah, but you’re not my little boy anymore.” She sounded a little sad. “You’re growing up so fast. You’re a little man now. It’s so hard for me to let you go and do things on your own, but I know I’ve got to.”

I felt a little embarrassed by her talking like that in front of my new friends, but I tried not to show it. “So, is that a yes?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said with a smile and kissed my forehead, “but only if Silas and Billie call their parents to make sure they can leave our property.”

“Where does this Shirley Brown live?” Dad asked Silas.

Silas pointed over his shoulder. “She has that white house right down the street from y’all. It’s right next to your cow pasture.”

“Oh, I know the place.” Dad nodded his head. “Yeah, y’all can walk right through the pasture and access her property without even getting on the road.”

“Yes, sir,” Silas said. “There’s that little gate leading from your pasture to her yard.”

That seemed to ease my mom’s mind, but she still wanted Silas to call his dad. She found her cell phone amongst the clutter on the little nook near the garage door and handed it to Silas. Billie and I waited while he asked permission.
