Chapter Twenty
Tristan sat in the same spot by his dadâs marker. After a few minutes, the snow melted into his jeans and snowflakes began to fall. Finally the crunch of hesitant footsteps in the snow brought his attention up to where Morgan traversed the cemetery toward him. She paused on the other side of the headstone.
âWhat are you doing here?â she asked.
âVisiting my dad.â
âReally?â She moved around the marker and stared down at it. âHeâs been gone awhile.â
âYeah.â
âDo you miss him?â
âI do. A lot.â
âAnd your momâs with Gavril.â She sighed. âThatâs brutal.â
âTell me about it,â he replied sarcastically.
âWhereâs Justice?â
âAt our roomâor out on the hunt.â
âWhy didnât you bring him with you?â
âWhy do you ask so many fucking questions?â he snapped.
âJeez, what is your malfunction?â
âYou shouldnât pry into a personâs business,â he countered.
âWell, you could be a little friendlier.â
He wilted.
âIâm sorry.â Morgan knelt next to him. âI can be a bit overwhelming. I think itâs one of the reasons Gavril kicked me out.â
He couldnât seem to take his gaze off his fatherâs name, as if it was there to ground him. âWhat did you mean about me being naïve?â
She sighed again and lowered herself on to the edge of the platform stone. âYouâre drawn to me, and Justice knows it.â
âIâm not drawn to you.â
âYou are, but youâre not aware of it yet.â
He smirked. âIf you say so.â
Silence passed between them; even his father was quiet. He chuckled at that thought and rose.
âWhere are you going?â Morgan looked up at him.
âIâm hungry.â
She held her arm out, wrist up. âHere.â
âWhat? Feed from you?â
âWhy not?â
He blinked. âI have a tough time controlling myself.â The image of the morgue assistant heâd killed rose unbidden in his mind. He grimaced, turning away from Morgan. âI donât want to go into a blood frenzy and drain you.â
Her pupils widened as she stared up at him. âYou regret becoming a vampire, donât you?â
It startled him that sheâd zeroed in on his internal turmoil. âWhy are you staying in the cemetery instead of a shelter or with one of your street friends?â
She got to her feet but didnât move away. The aroma of her blood wafted to him, a sweet and heady mixture. The light of the security lamps gilded her hair in blue and silver. The top of her head only reached mid-chest on him. He wanted to simultaneously bite her and hug her.
âThere are lots of vamps in shelters. They hunt there, looking for those they can feed on, then kill and no one will notice.â Morgan nodded toward the crypt. âThere, Iâm left alone. No matter what books and movies say, vampires donât hang out in cemeteries because thereâs nothing to feed on except rats and mice.â
That idea had never occurred to him. He smiled. âYouâre clever.â
At that, she grinned from ear to ear.
âSo do you want to feed?â She held out her arm again.
âNo, but thank you. Like I said, I donât want to lose control.â
She nodded. âTake care, Tristan.â
Although she would be safe in the tomb, Tristan was bothered that she would be there alone.
