Grant rushed over to Olivia’s as quickly as he could, and he found her very frazzled—something he wasn’t accustomed to.

“What happened?” he asked.

“Layton’s back.”

“What?” Okay, that would explain her current state.

“Yes. He was here waiting for me when I got home.”

He placed his hands on her shoulders. “Did he touch you? Did he hurt you?”

She shook her head. “No, it wasn’t like that, but he did threaten me. He basically said he was back to finish what he had started.”

“So he took responsibility for everything.”

“No. That’s the strange part. He played dumb. Completely oblivious.”

Grant scoffed. “Yeah, right. There’s no way he has clean hands in this thing.”

“My thoughts exactly.” She took a breath. “Grant, he seemed even more powerful and dangerous than before. I didn’t think that was possible, but he had a demonic entourage with him. I could feel their presence.”

Grant had dreaded the day of Layton’s return, but he still wasn’t prepared for any of this. “We need to think.”

“I know. I’m trying to get myself together, but he really threw me off balance, and of course I was doing my best not to show him how I was really feeling.”

He pulled her close to him and wrapped his arms around her. It was at moments like these that he really hated living in Windy Ridge. He knew they were supposed to be fighting these battles, but seeing Olivia hurt and shaky was almost enough to make him take her away from it all. There was no way she’d leave though, and if she stayed, then he wasn’t going anywhere.

“I’m going to be okay. I feel safe showing you my weakness.”

Hearing those words come out of her mouth broke his heart. He could no longer wait. He felt compelled to act. He hadn’t been sure what had led him to pull the engagement ring out of the safe and put it in his jacket pocket before he left home, but now he knew.

He moved away from her a little and just looked into her beautiful dark eyes.

“What is it?” she asked.

“I love you, Olivia. You’re right that you don’t have to hide anything from me. You can show me your strongest times and your weakest. When you’re at your best or at your worst.”

Then she smiled. “Aren’t you the romantic this evening.” She reached for him, but he went done on one knee.

Her mouth dropped open, and her eyes widened.

“Olivia, I love you more than anything in the world. Our relationship is built on so many things, including our love for each other and our shared faith. A faith you helped show me about through how you’ve lived your life. I know we have already faced many battles together, and tonight has shown us we’re still going to be fighting. Who knows? We may fight our entire lives, but I know I want to be beside you through all of it. I don’t want to waste another minute apart. Will you marry me?” He held his breath waiting for her response.
