CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Hey, Zane!” Emmett greeted him as soon as Zane stepped out of his truck. “I heard about that new foal of yours. You better get ready to get into some major fights when you start riding a horse named Muffin.”

Zane shook his head in disgust. What had he been thinking? No self-respecting rancher in the country would name a male horse Muffin. Or a female for that matter. And there was little doubt that Carly would call him Stud Muffin, which would be even worse. But it was too late now.

“Hey Zane,” Stu Greenly, who was playing dominos with Emmett, greeted him. Stu was as deaf as a stone, but didn’t realize it. “You brought us some muffins? Do you have bran? I’ve been a little constipated and could use the fiber.”

“He didn’t bring muffins, Stu!” Emmett yelled. “He named his new foal Muffin.”

Stu tipped back his head and laughed. Zane rolled his eyes before he nodded at the garage. “Is Cole around?”

“He’s inside working on Joe Wheeler’s truck,” Emmett said. “Have you gotten things settled with Rachel yet? The Chili Cook-off is just around the corner. And seeing as how she was last year’s queen, she’ll need to be here to hand off her sash and chili queen crown.”

Zane started to make up an excuse for why Rachel wouldn’t be back in time, but then stopped. He was through with excuses. And with denial. The town would find out sooner or later, and Carly was right. It would be less pathetic if it came from him. “I don’t think Rachel will be back for the cook-off, Emmett.”

Emmett studied him for a moment before he nodded. “Fair enough. Sometimes you have to let things be what they’ll be.”

“You got bees?” Stu looked at Zane and shook his head. “Now that’s one hell of a problem. They got into my attic one time and stung the hell out of me when I tried to extract the hive. Of course, it gave me and Martha some of the best honey I ever tasted.”

Emmett huffed. “Just play, Stu!”

Zane laughed as he headed for the garage. He found Cole underneath a Chevy pickup. Cole was one hardworking son of a gun. He had to be since his late father hadn’t been the best manager of their ranch. Zane had offered financial help time and time again, but Cole always refused. It seemed stubbornness was an Arrington trait.

Since the radio was blasting a country tune, Zane kicked the sole of Cole’s boot to get his attention. He rolled out from under the truck, and his eyes sparkled with humor as soon as he saw Zane.

“Muffin?”

Zane sighed. “Yeah, well, that’s what happens when you let good food go to your head.”

Cole wiped his hands off with a rag before he got to his feet. “So you did let Carly name him. Emery said as much, but I didn’t believe her.”

Zane wasn’t surprised that Carly had told her friend. She was pretty happy with the name, and maybe that was why he had no plans to change it.
