That night we slept at Gramma’s trailer. Even though I was more tired than I’d ever been in my life, I had a hard time falling asleep.

For one thing, there was only one double bed in Gramma’s spare bedroom, so Samantha and I had to share, and she practically took up the whole bed. For another thing, I couldn’t seem to get the smell of smoke out of my head. I’d start to drift away, then I’d find myself sitting up just to breathe.

Even when I finally did fall asleep, I kept smelling the smoke, and I found myself running around my house, trying to find the fire. Then somehow the fire was everywhere, all around me, burning away the walls and even the floor beneath me. Then the flames completely swallowed up the floor and I fell into thin air.

I was falling from the fire with nothing but terrifying blackness beneath me. I opened my mouth to scream when my body jerked me awake and I rose up into the dark of Gramma’s spare bedroom, gasping for air.

Samantha turned over with a groan. “Christ, what is your problem?”

I pressed my hand against my chest, trying to slow my racing heartbeat. “I don’t know. I keep thinking I smell smoke.”

She was quiet for a long moment. “Yeah,” she said as she rolled back toward the wall. “Me too.”

I lay back down. I hoped the smoke smell would leave my head soon. I hoped it wasn’t stuck there forever.
