Erik knew he was breaking his own rules. He told himself it was from being pressed so close in the dark, but it was a thin excuse. Suddenly the crazy thoughts he’d been having the last few days (or months, if he was being honest) became impossible to ignore. He’d been lying to himself about just how affected he was by his infuriating, stubborn, and intoxicating nemesis. Garrett had pointed it out…more than once. He was sure the henchman would lay it on thick with an “I told you so.” It was bad enough he was working with a hero. It was beyond bad they knew each other’s identities. But this? There was no coming back from this. This could not end well. Not that any of it mattered now.

Now all that mattered was that, against all odds, she was kissing him back. In the back of his mind, he’d expected to play off his spurned advance with a shrug and a mischievous grin as cover. Instead, she came alive in his arms, hooking her elbows over his shoulders to pull him closer. The hands that usually threw fireballs at him were fisted in the fabric of his shirt.

Her reaction made him bold. He pushed at her lips with his tongue, and she parted to let him in. Even when his tongue darted into her mouth, she showed no sign of slowing down. Her fingers twined into his hair. He let his hand slide down her back and drop below her waist. She moaned into his mouth.

Whether he lifted her or she did it herself he wasn’t sure, but the next minute she had both legs wrapped around him. He leaned her back against the shelving. When he released her mouth, she searched blindly with her lips, trying to find him again. He breathed a trail along her jaw and down her neck. His hand slid under her shirt. That elicited a louder moan than was safe, but he couldn’t for the life of him remember why they needed to keep quiet. He barely noticed when the footsteps approached again.

Both of them froze in place, panting quietly. She clung to him breathlessly, and he wondered if he’d ever get to be this close to her again. The guard passed by. Unwilling to let the moment end, he kept his face buried against her throat.

“I think the coast is clear now,” she whispered, her voice hoarse. Had regret set in so quickly?

“Mm-hmm,” he murmured. He still hadn’t put her down. Letting her hair brush his face, he inhaled deeply one last time and let her go. She gripped his arms to steady herself. Not for the first time, he got the feeling she was finding excuses to touch his muscles. She didn’t say a word and wouldn’t look him in the eyes. When she tugged her mask back on, he did the same. If she was going to act like nothing happened then so was he.

The two of them crept out the way they’d come.
