Chapter Ten

Davina

I don’t want to go to work today. Not only is it Valentine’s Day, but I just don’t have a good feeling about leaving the house. Begrudgingly, I get out of bed, grab a quick shower, and throw on my scrubs before I hunt for something to eat. Once I make my way into the kitchen, I see Oliver sitting at the glass table with his back towards me reading the newspaper and listening to ‘All Around Me’ by Flyleaf. I walk over to him, wrap my arms around him, and steal a bite of his watermelon.

“Good morning, beautiful,” he says, bringing me around and placing me in his lap so I’m straddling him. I give him a quick kiss on the lips before he continues. “Happy Valentine's Day, Songbird,” he says, smiling.

I lean back slightly, “Good morning Ollie, Happy Valentine's Day!” I exclaim as I get off of him and go to grab my things.

“Hey baby, I have something for you,” he says as he stands up and makes his way to me. He reaches into his pocket, pulls out the little box that Harlow handed him yesterday, and hands it to me. I open the box and my mouth drops as I see the beautiful silver charm bracelet. It has charms of a paw print, a microphone, a stack of books, a songbird, and a music note.

“Oliver, It’s beautiful! Can you help me put it on please?” I ask him.

“Of course, Songbird,” he says as he grabs my arm lightly and latches the bracelet to my wrist.

God, it’s so fucking pretty!

I’ve never been given anything like this at all. Let alone a place I can genuinely call home.

Oliver leans down and gives me a sweet, but longing kiss before he backs away. “Have a good day, Songbird! I will see you later tonight! Take the car please, so you don’t have to walk,” he says lovingly while bringing me in for a massive bear hug.

“I will. I’ll tell you all about it when I get home,” I say as I feel a blush creep its way up my face. “And it’s okay, I’d rather walk. The clinic isn’t that far from here, maybe a twenty-minute walk, if that. I’ll be okay.” I make my way to the kitchen to grab my bag and lunch.

He stops in front of me and growls, “I don’t like the idea of you walking to work, but I understand you want your own independence. Just please let me know as soon as you cross the threshold of the clinic.”

I place a kiss on his cheek before I turn to head out. “I will… Daddy,” with a chuckle following me out the door.

As soon as I get outside, I reach into my pocket to grab my headphones, plug them in, and let the glorious sound of Zara Larson's ‘Uncover’ serenade me. Taking a deep breath, I start my walk to the Tree of Hope vet clinic. The closer I get, the more of an uneasy feeling washes over me.
