Chapter 12

Is it a Rat or a Mole?

Owen

My phone lights up with a text from Dan as I’m lifting weights in the local gym. I joined the only thing resembling a “meathead” gym in this part of Santa Barbara. While I’m not a body builder, I find I work out harder when I’m surrounded by a dozen muscle maniacs who consider it weak to so much as exhale too loudly let alone grunt when deadlifting.

I ignore my phone, having just one more set remaining until I’m done. Even though Courtney and I just had sex several hours ago, and I should be calmed down, I’m not. I gave up trying to sleep and just got up and decided to burn steam here. Despite the four a.m. hour, the place is busy.

I put my weights back on the rack and towel off my sweat. The gym showers are gross, even for bro standards, so I grab my bag and head to the door.

“Damnit, Dan,” I grumble as I see another text come in from him. “Maybe you actually do have a crush on me or something.”

I start my truck and glance at my phone. “Shit.” I read Dan’s text, my adrenaline pumping. Courtney is at the hotel and a big rock was thrown through the front window. Cops are on their way and Dan was informed immediately. Apparently he got there first.

No time to shower now. As I’m driving to the motel, I pull off my sweaty shirt and haphazardly pull on a fresh one. It’s a gym shirt that has no sleeves and is deep cut, revealing my muscled chest.

I try not to chuckle since the situation at the motel is serious. “Not the most professional attire. But it’s nothing Courtney hasn’t seen already.”

I know it’s early, but I call Lance.

“Do you ever sleep?” he grumbles as he answers the phone.

“Sleeping on the job while the bad guys play, I see,” I quip and then fill him in on what I know about the motel. “Coincidence that a rock gets thrown into the window of the very motel where the witness to hoodie guy’s condo break-in took place?”

Lance yawns. “Whoa, whoa. That is a shit ton of words you jumbled together there. So you think that hoodie knows who Courtney is. He knows where she works. And he went there at random, unprovoked, to throw a rock through a window?” Lance chuckles. “Yeah, I’m not buying it. Also, fun fact, another hoodie guy popped up at a safe house we have in Miami. Totally unrelated to Pedro, but exactly what we thought would happen is, in fact, happening.”

“When?” I ask, offended that I’m in the dark. “I didn’t get the memo on that.”

“FBI stuff,” he says dismissively. “I was planning to tell you tomorrow… um, later this morning.”

My mind is running fast as I drive. “If Courtney isn’t the target, then who?”

“Who usually works that shift? I doubt Courtney mans the desk all the time all by herself, right? She’s got staff.
