Chapter Nineteen

The presentation was flawless as if that came as a surprise to anyone. Everyone on the team nailed their part of the pitch, but Robbie truly sealed the deal. His innate ability to capture an entire room’s attention with the snap of his finger was mesmerizing. Thanks to him and all his prep work, Prestige Harbor Hotels will have their first international hotel opened by this time next year.

We all speed-walked out of the office building and immediately became those annoying Americans who started whooping and jumping up and down right there on the sidewalk. Robbie tried to stay humble, biting back his smile. That lasted until we shuttled back to the hotel and made our way to the hotel bar for a round of drinks.

The celebration swirled around us. While everyone else reveled in alcohol-fueled euphoria, Robbie and I sipped our drinks with measured restraint, our eyes meeting occasionally and sharing unspoken thoughts.

When the third hour of celebrating came and went, after we migrated to the brick and ivy patio connected to the hotel, Robbie’s glowing eyes continue to find their way to me no matter how many conversations he’s pulled into. Seeing Robbie truly beam like he has all day leaves me light on my feet and glowing by association. I’m addicted to seeing him like this and the contact high that accompanies it. I can’t go back to my room like some others have…no matter how badly my feet throb from standing in stilettos for God knows how many hours.

“You did it, Robbie boy,” Lawrence says, leaning his entire body weight onto Robbie’s shoulders, his words slurring from too many drinks. “There’s a pretty bonus waitin’ for ya back in the office. I know it. I can smell it. You know, I have a skill for sniffing out money.”

“Is that where the fifty-pound note in my wallet went?” Shane asks.

Everyone but Robbie and me breaks into ruckus laughter.

“You know, Kali here did at least half the work on this project,” Robbie says, tipping his beer in my direction as he talks.

I smile faintly, waving off the compliment with my attention focused on Robbie’s unwavering gaze.

“I’m serious,” Robbie continues, breezing right past my comment about only choosing the stationary as part of the project. “Kali did everything that’s far beyond my capabilities, and you all know better than anyone where my capabilities start and end.” This causes another wave of ruckus laughter to float through the group, apparently all being in on the same joke I don’t understand. “You met with the creative team, what, close to a hundred times just this week alone, didn’t you?”

He says this last part, his smile warming as he nods toward me, a silent acknowledgment that speaks volumes. The rest of the world fades into background noise as we share this moment.

Robbie leans in slightly, his eyes dancing with mischief, and says, “So I say if there’s a bonus with my name on it, there should be one for Kali, too.”

The remaining group of men fake retch.
