Chapter 14

Kyle

“See who has finally decided to grace us with his presence,” Jake says the moment I walk into the rooftop lounge where they are all seated having drinks. It’s our regular meet up bar.

Emily who’s sitting beside Mike, looking at her phone, quickly gets off her seat and comes to give me a hug.

“It’s so good to see you again,” she says smiling.

“It’s so good to have our friend back,” Mike says, shaking my hand as he gets up to meet me.

“You guys talk as if you lost me.”

Jake takes a sip of his drink giving me a side eye. “When was the last time you hung out with us? Ever since you got married, we’ve barely seen you.”

Jake is right about that, ever since Jewel and I got married, I’ve barely hung out with my friends and it hasn’t been on purpose, I just find myself spending more time with Jewel. When I’m not working, I’m at home spending time with her.

She makes my house feel like home. I used to think my space was my safe haven, but ever since Jewel stepped in, she has turned it into something more.

“For someone who didn’t want to get married, you look really happy.” Emily comments.

I take a seat beside Mike, adjacent from Jake and Emily. “How do you mean?” I ask, feigning ignorance as I pour myself two fingers of scotch, nodding my head to the soft jazz tune that’s coming from the speakers.

“You’re glowing, man, you look like you’re in love,” Emily teases.

Jake shakes his head. “No, you’ve got it wrong, he doesn’t look like he’s in love, he is in love.”

I shake my head laughing not denying or confirming their statement.

“You aren’t making any effort to deny it, so does that mean that you’re truly in love?” Mike asks nudging my arm with his.

I shrug, wondering if I should talk about my feelings for Jewel with my friends, knowing them very well, I know that they will taunt me about it. As I’ve always been anti-love.

“So, tell us how a guy who has always been anti-marriage, ends up not only getting married but also falling in love.”

I turn to look at Jake as he speaks and decide that it would best just to pretend that I’m not in love with Jewel.

“What makes you think that I’m in love?”

“Aren’t you?” Emily asks. “We see your pictures with her on blogs and social media all the time. And last week you had one of the popular artistes in L.A hang a picture of her in his art exhibition.”

I shrug, taking a sip of my drink and then proceeding to pour more for myself. “And how does that translate into being in love?”

Jake leans back in his chair, an arm draped around Emily’s shoulders, and she leans in placing her head on his arm.

I know Emily has a thing for Jake but the love has always been unrequited, have they started dating now? What did I miss, these past weeks
