“Nyla!” Shahzad’s voice rings out from the front door. “You’ve got packages.”

I quickly power down my sewing machine and rush to the entrance, where Shahzad stands holding two beige boxes. “Oh, wonderful! It’s finally here. Thank you, love.” I grab the boxes from him and place them on the dining table. Sky sniffs around, probably suspecting bags of cocaine or something. “Down, girl. It’s just clothes.”

“Clothes?” Shahzad questions, washing his hands in the kitchen sink.

“Online shopping. It was a fifteen and under sale.” Because going to the mall is one of my greatest fears for several different reasons. The risk of accidental exposure, facing old advertisements featuring me, or, worst of all, stumbling upon a lingerie store.

Besides, my reliance on my fashion team meant I rarely set foot in a mall. Choosing outfits involved pointing at magazine photos or Fashion Week models, leaving me with a gap of missed experiences—no food-court indulgence, no kiddie coin machines, no trying on clothes with friends, and no impromptu fashion shows in narrow changing room hallways.

“Here,” Shahzad interrupts my thoughts, handing me a pair of scissors. “Open it. I want to see what you bought, too.”

“You just came from work. Go rest. I’ll show them to you la—”

Shahzad cuts me off with a kiss. “Respectfully, no.”

Chuckling at his antics, I slice through the cardboard boxes and unveil the layers of tissue within. A warm flush creeps up my cheeks when he envelops me in a hug from behind, resting his chin on the top of my head. Mini pleated skirts, lace cami-tops, cozy wool sweaters for winter, frilly blouses, and a classic pair of mom jeans spill out. In the second box, I catch a glimpse of satin and lace lingerie and quickly close the lid. “See? It’s just pink and ordinary. Nothing special. Let’s make some food now.”

“No, no, no,” he protests, pulling me back by my arm and gesturing towards the boxes with a lopsided, cocky grin. “I’d like to request a personal fashion show from Nyla Ghilzai.”

My brows shoot past my hairline. “You’ve lost your mind.”

He grins boyishly. “For you.”

His charms break through my defenses, and I nod. “You’re unbelievably cheesy.”

“For you.”

I snort, pushing at his chest. “Take the boxes to the bedroom.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He effortlessly carries both packages in one arm, smirking as he breezes past me.

Player.

I carefully arrange the clothes on the bed, stealing glances at him as I unpack the lingerie box. Fortunately, he remains focused on me, his crinkled eyes never leaving my face as his hands unconsciously pet Sky. Gathering the outfits I’ve selected, I scan the room. The bathroom is situated outside, and the closet is as cramped as a mole’s burrow, leaving only the bedroom as a possible option.

“Um, do you mind?” I make a circular motion with my finger. Respecting my privacy, Shahzad turns his smile towards the wall, swooping Mr. Chewy off the floor and tossing him in the air for Sky to catch with her mouth.

Taking five minutes, I change into the first set of flare jeans and velvet blouse combo.
